The biggest saving on heating bills is achieved by increasing insulation. Here the photo shows the hottest parts of the building are the double glazed windows and doors. Most windows have around 24 mm thick glazed units, but for a greater saving 50 mm thick units are recommended in-fact even triple glazed 24 mm unit still have similar heat losses to the equivalent double glazed units.
Loft Insulation should be 300 mm (12inches) thick and wall cavities should also be insulated.
Boiler flow temperatures should be designed at 50 degrees Celsius which means radiators should be installed with a much higher output than they would have had with 80-92 degrees Celsius.
Not only is heat lost through the fabric of the building but there is also loss through ventilation. Loft hatches chimneys air vents and trickle vents etc. For example a house could have 1.5 to 15 complete air changes per hour, this can be over come by sealing up the air leakage abd using s heat recover unit. The heat recovery unit takes air from the house to outside air via a heat exchanger , the heat from the air is retained and now cold damp air is discharged outside fresh air coming in has the heat retained from the heat exchanger transferred into it.
Once the heat losses have been addressed much smaller boiler which will give variable heat output known as a “modulating boiler” can be installed depending on the calculated heat losses the boiler will need to be able to modulate down to a low enough output to match the calculations not all boilers are equal. This being said some boilers are not suitable for older houses and may cause system issues.
At APS we are not tied to any particular boiler manufacturer, we can offer any make and model of boiler that suits your property. We can also carry out heat loss surveys and suggests methods of reducing electricity, oil or gas bills.
