As we move into summer, my lawn care tips are:

✂️ Mow High: set your mower blades higher in the summer. Taller grass shades the soil, prevents water evaporation, and stops w**d seeds from germinating.
✂️ One-Third Rule: never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade in a single pass.
✂️ Keep Blades Sharp: a dull blade rips the grass rather than cutting it cleanly, which can leave ragged, brown edges that open the lawn up to diseases.

Summer watering
💧 Give a good soaking two or three times a week, rather than shallow, frequent watering.
💧 Use a sprinkler to save time and effort and to ensure the water has time to soak in.
💧 Water early morning or once the lawn is in shade in the evening in order to reduce losses from evaporation.
💧 Lawns need about 2-3cm of water each week to stay healthy, so in the absence of rain apply about 1.5cm each session if you water twice a week.

Your garden is loving the rain even if you are not! 🌦 My spring renovations are finally coming on well.

I've had a busy spring with lawn scarifications and renovations. 🌱

Have you removed moss and thatch from your lawn yet this year, or is your grass being choked by it still?

Dry weather? Don’t let your lawn suffer! ☀️🌱
With a super dry start to spring so far and no rain in sight, consistent watering is key to keeping your grass lush and green.

💧 Lawns need about 3mm of water a day during the growing season — and one deep soak a week can do wonders! Skip the quick sprinkles — they won’t reach the roots.

Once grass turns brown, it’s tough to revive without a good rain. Stay ahead of the heat and keep that vibrant green glow going strong!

Top Lawn Watering Tips:
✅ Water deeply to nourish roots
✅ Use a rain gauge — aim for 5–10mm each session
✅ Water in the evening to minimize evaporation
✅ A wide-coverage sprinkler = less time and better results

As soil temperatures begin to rise, lawns across the country are waking up and putting on fresh growth. It’s an exciting time—but also a crucial one for giving your lawn the right support.

Healthy growth doesn’t happen without proper nutrition. New roots, leaves and cells all depend on a steady supply of the right nutrients, so now is the time to make sure your lawn is well fed.

🌿 Apply a spring/summer lawn feed, always following the manufacturer’s recommendations carefully.

🌿 As a general guide, choose a feed rich in Nitrogen (N), supported by Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K)—shown as the NPK ratio on the packaging. A ratio around 20:4:10 is a good starting point, although this can vary between products. If you’re unsure, a UKLCA member can advise on what’s best for your lawn and soil type.

🌿 Use a properly calibrated spreader for even application. Avoid spreading granular feed by hand, as this can lead to patchy results, including scorching or uneven colour.

🌿 Consider supplementing with a foliar feed to give your lawn an extra boost of essential minerals, helping to improve colour and strengthen root development.

🌿 Check how often your chosen product should be applied—and set a reminder so you don’t miss the next treatment.

If you’re unsure which feed to use or how to apply it, it’s always worth asking for advice. Mistakes can be costly and, in some cases, damaging to your lawn.

Planning to mow your lawn this weekend?

Here are a few do's and don'ts:

✅ Sharpen the mower blades before you start - aim for a clean cut - no ripping or chewing at the grass because that leaves the plants more vulnerable to frost damage and disease.

❌ Don't reduce the length of the grass by any more than 25 - 30% . If your lawn is looking very shaggy, reduce the mowing height gradually over several cuts.

✅ Remove all clippings

❌ Keep off the grass if the soil is waterlogged or if frost is forecast for your area

✅ Take time to trim the edges for a beautifully manicured look

✅ Use this opportunity to spot any areas that could need levelling or overseeding this spring
