Cowboy Glaziers Are Still Out There!
While fitting new fire escape hinges in Bispham today, I discovered this little gem left behind by a previous installer.
The window had been glazed using blue transport pads – the temporary pads used to protect and separate glass during transportation. These are never intended to be used as glazing packers in a finished installation.
Proper glazing packers are essential to support the weight of the sealed unit, prevent sash drop, maintain operation, and ensure the window performs as designed. Using transport pads instead is simply poor workmanship.
It's a reminder that not all window installations are carried out to the standard they should be. Unfortunately, years later, it's often the homeowner who ends up paying for the repairs.
If your windows are difficult to open, catching on the frame, dropping, or suffering from failed hinges, it may be worth having them checked over.
