The Art of Quiet Gardening TotnesGardening.Co.UK

Yesterday, while I was out tending to a lawn here in Totnes, I had some wonderful company. As I moved across the freshly cut grass, a resident pair of blackbirds—the striking male with his bright yellow beak and the beautifully speckled brown female—moved in right behind me to forage. It is moments like these that remind me why I do what I do.

It has been an incredibly busy couple of weeks here at 🏡 TotnesGardening.Co.UK ☀️ With the record-breaking heat we've been experiencing across Devon lately, my schedule has been packed with new planting, regular maintenance, and—most importantly right now—laying down a whole lot of decorative bark. 🌷 www.totnesgardening.co.uk/blog-2-1/decorative-bark

A Robin's company on a grey day

They are brave, opportunistic little souls. While I was focused on the "human" concerns—preventing slips, restoring the colour of the stone, tidying the edges—he was reminding me that even a dirty driveway is an ecosystem. The moss I was removing was his larder.

We worked in tandem all afternoon. I cleared the ground, he cleared the grubs.

While the 60V handles the "brute force" tasks, my 40V equipment is my go-to for the intricate, quirkier spaces that make Totnes gardens so beautiful but notoriously challenging to maintain.🏡

Blackbird singing in the garden

You might have noticed that when a lawn is freshly cut, the birds move in almost immediately. This male blackbird wasn't just singing for the sake of it; he was on a mission. As the grass is trimmed, it exposes the ground, making it much easier for him to spot and collect insects to take back to the nest.

Seeing him hopping through the borders and listening to that rich, flute-like song is a reminder that our gardens are active nurseries for local wildlife.

You were only waiting for this moment to arise
