Alex works for both private garden owners and commercial developments providing a design service from the initial conception to the finished construction for both gardens and larger landscapes. Working with the clients through a creative design process ensures a comprehensive and truly bespoke scheme is achieved. Alex studied Fine Art in Cumbria from 1996-1999 and, following a period of working, h

e turned to his great passions of art and gardens. He completed the Garden and Landscape Design HND at Duchy college from 2013-2015. This course was run by the extremely successful duo of Matt James and Richard Sneesby. Following his art degree he began working at Hayles Howe in 2001, a small ornamental plasterwork company founded on a commitment to traditional crafts and artistic endeavour. Initially driven by his love of sculpture he produced and installed plasterwork for prestigious projects such as the Coolmore stud refurbishment in Ireland and Tusmore house, England. Eventually moving into logistics and scheduling on jobs such as Harewood House and finally No1 Hyde park, the penthouse development. These experiences provided the solid understanding of the construction industry which underpins his garden design practice.

Creating shape and interest in a narrow garden can be difficult as every inch matters. I find focusing on the paths and thresholds at an early stage, and selecting materials at the correct size to work within these restrictions comfortably, makes a massive difference. When you feel you've got this right, everything else falls into place.

This property was originally on the grounds of an old orchard that belonged to the village Manor House. We have aimed to draw on some of that history and reconnect the new garden to the story of this lovely old cottage. It includes a pleach hedge of Malus Everest to create a soft boundary by the terrace. We are also establishing 2 more crab apples at the head of the path which will be shaped into a living fruit tree arch later this year.

I am always hesitant to post photos of gardens before the plants have grown. When I moved to Cornwall nearly 15 years ago my love for the natural world had become a bit submerged, kept mainly in fond memories of growing up in Somerset. Having now been designing for 10 years all those memories are again part of my everyday life, and I can’t imagine any garden without plants.

There wasn’t consideration for planting in the origianal brief for this project, but we squeeze in these multistem Amelanchier ‘canadensis’. It’s a great option in tight spaces as it is a little smaller than the more popular ‘lamarckii’. It will soon burst into life and leaf with a mass of green from the Hakonechloa Macra filling the small beds. It’s simple but it gives the garden seasonality and a heartbeat.

As a gardener there is something magic about taking the cover off the compost to find all that debris and food waste has turned into rich, dark compost, in shades of red and brown, dripping with young worms ready to go forth and till your soil ..

How much time should you put into visuals? It's always such a pressing question, once youve resolved the garden. Spending extra time presenting it is costly, and yet the presentation can be the difference between getting a job or not.

Finding simple, quick ways of demonstrating the qualities of the garden is so important and there is always a balance to be struck.

Building new gardens can be expensive. We are always very honoured when a client entrusts us to balance a desire to create inspiring new gardens in line with their project investment.

This family garden is being built in stages.

We have used stone from an old hedge to create the low retainers and steps around the paving. This both saves money and ensures that the material choice has a underlying relationship to the property. Traditionally these miners cottages would often have been built up using materials that were on hand.

We then used a large format porcelain for the entertainment area which relates back to the interior tiles of the house and we've used sweet chestnut timber from the UK to create the serpentine path. The use of hardwood means the path can be cleaned with a pressure washer without the wood furring up which improves safety and makes it easy to maintain.

We're approaching the end of the build of this pretty little garden. It has been such a pleasure to build for this wonderful couple. Building real gardens for people to enjoy and to love is a wonderful thing. I am looking forward to coming back in the Spring to see the garden in colour and also the fruit cake.

This beautiful little cottage used to be part of a larger estate, the house was built in the old apple orchard. We thought it would be great to bring some of the characteristics of an old orchard back and it is really starting to feel like a garden in the right place now.

We've brought in pleached Malus Everest to give a bit of privacy, a water tank with a Lilly, and old twisted oak post, granite from Delank and beach hedges. There'll also be a fruit tree arch over the entrance way.

Best of all the timing has worked out brilliantly for effortless grass growing! The steel edged beds will be over flowering with new perennial style planting come spring.
