Tanner Architecture

Tanner Architecture Architects in Tunbridge Wells. Tanner Architecture is an enthusiastic and friendly architecture practice based in Tunbridge Wells in Kent. It works really well.

Primarily serving London, Kent, Sussex and south east and specialising in residential design: Houses, home extensions and conversions & apartment buildings for private homeowners, developers and building contractors. The practice was established by architect, Paul Tanner, as a natural progression following more than twenty years’ experience of designing and managing the successful delivery of buil

ding projects across London, the south east and further afield. Paul's considerable experience stretches across all stages of the delivery of architectural services and for a diverse range of clients including property developers, design-and-build contractors, local authorities, schools and NHS Trusts as well as private individuals. However, we have a particular love for designing peoples' homes. We have completed a very broad range of homes for a very broad range of clients and in a equally broad range of contexts – including urban, conservation area, green belt and rural settings. This means that we are extremely well placed to help you with developing your proposals. We take great pride in all we design and aspire to the very best a project can be. Our excellent technical knowledge and understanding of building design, detailing, regulations and procurement helps the design process to proceed as smoothly as possible. Each client is unique and our job is to understand your requirements and priorities and to offer proposals that meet these and give you more. We enjoy the challenge - and the honour - of being asked to design and deliver the places that people call their home. Some of the wonderful comments received from people we have worked with previously include ...

"(The building) looks great: We're all very proud of it." "I realised that I now get it; what a good architect does." "The building is fantastic! This is mostly due to the design and that is down to you. I just wanted to say thanks in a rather big way." "I very much appreciate your input which has turned the building into something much better than the planning consented proposals (... by others)"

"I'd work with you again in a heartbeat."

PLANNING CONSENT: Tanner Architecture is proud to have secured planning consent for the refurbishment and adaptation of a disused late-Victorian villa in Tunbridge Wells.

Situated within a conservation area, the building has stood unoccupied for a number of years. Our approved proposals include sensitive renovations and the introduction of a lift to serve four generously sized, luxury apartments—each with its own private terrace or balcony. The new balcony structure is designed to echo the profile of the adjacent original full-height bay, with a steel construction that references traditional ironwork details characteristic of the building’s original period.

It has been a pleasure to develop proposals that will bring this characterful building back to life. We are now progressing with the detailed design and look forward to working closely with our client to see the building thrive once again.

Tanner Architecture is celebrating its fifth anniversary this week!

Our thanks go to all of those we have worked with during these first five years; particularly our clients. Many of whom, we are proud to say, have been repeat clients!

Our projects have ranged from new-build apartment blocks and houses, to forming new dwellings from existing buildings via change of use or to create HMOs and to domestic extensions and adaptations for private homeowners. Each project faces unique challenges but all are carefully considered and developed towards achieving the best potential outcome.

Thanks again to all of the clients, consultants and contractors that we’ve worked with and are continuing to work with. We look forward to the opportunity to meet many more in the forthcoming years!

FINALLY… Tunbridge Wells becomes 3D in Google Maps!

Always useful for assessing a little more context of projects - especially when they are near neighbours.

Some sweeping generalisation included… but quite fun!
Suggesting SE England homes have a slight bias to improving private internal space over improving the external appearance.
A successful (ie. good) building will be a perfect balance of each!

In the UK, you don't have to be an architect to design a building.

If you want a smoother path to seeing it realised though, they're a very good idea!

PLANNING CONSENT: Tanner Architecture has won planning consent for proposed adaptations, extension and remodelling to this Edwardian house in Tunbridge Wells.

The design includes adapting four smaller and unsatisfactory rooms at the rear of the property to provide a spacious informal living/entertaining space with good access to daylight and to the large garden beyond.

Without neglecting the effect of the large flat roof covering to this space, a green (sedum) roof finish ensures that views from the upper stories of the house retain a close connection to the natural environment.

PLANNING CONSENT: Tanner Architecture has won planning consent for two proposed extensions to this house sited in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and bordering a Conservation Area.

The original house is formed from the conversion of a pair of mid-nineteenth century attached abattoir-worker cottages and the proposals continue its subsequent 165 year+ tradition of adapting and extending in response to the evolving lifestyle needs of its owners.

The consented proposals include some internal replanning of the ground floor level and the formation of an associated new garden room. A separate single-storey side extension provides an additional sitting room and further ancillary accommodation.

The adaptation and re-use of existing buildings represents one of the most highly sustainable strategies: ‘The greenest building is the one that already exists.’

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS: I stumbled across this house being marketed on the internet this week. I like this house and its relationship to its local landscape context very much. As the person who designed it though, I should be ashamed if I didn’t!

The house - along with the 6 other new houses formed on the site that sits within an AONB – took its inspiration from the context of the former farmyard setting.

Now; if only I could stumble across £1.3m.

PRIDE IN LIONS: At the end of a busy year, Tanner Architecture is proud to announce its sponsorship of the mighty Tunbridge Wells Youth FC Lions team.

The team is made up of a great bunch of young players who have earned an enviable reputation for their commitment to attending all training sessions and matches; whether the sun shines, the rain is heavy or the cold biting.

Thanks to the impressive and committed leadership of coaches Richard and Nathan, the ongoing improvement of the squad has been clear to see. As the players continue to develop their bond whilst learning of their own roles, responsibilities, strengths and weaknesses within the team, and those of their teammates, we’re very excited to see what this Pride of Lions can go on to achieve.

Tanner Architecture has recently completed the detail design for this new ‘upside down’ home near Land’s End in Cornwall.

With all sleeping accommodation at ground floor level, daytime living accommodation is organised to the open-plan upper storey providing an elevated view towards Land’s End less than 2 miles away.

The building has been very carefully detailed to address local environmental challenges including the 'Very Severe' exposure of the site and the high levels of Radon ground gasses known to exist locally.

PLANNING CONSENT: Tanner Architecture’s proposal for two new houses to be formed on a site bordering a Conservation Area and within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) near Sevenoaks has recently won planning consent.

The homes have been designed to respond sensitively to the existing site context and scale of local residential buildings and, though the neighbouring buildings are substantially of two storey height, a significant slope to the site has been exploited to enable a three-storey home to be formed that appears presents as two-storey scale to each of the main elevations.

The proposal was supported by the local town council during the application process with the local planning authority reporting that the design positively ‘conserves and enhances the special landscape character of this part of the AONB.’
