Hello, and welcome to The Original Tree Surgeons' website. My name is Robert (Bob) Noakes and I am the company proprietor. To give you a little information about me and my background, I should explain that after completing my apprenticeship with the 'City of London' in Grounds Maintenance and Landscaping, I chose to specialise in arboriculture and work within the tree industry. I subsequently spen

t twenty years climbing and pruning trees before moving into arboriculture management. I have now been in the industry for over 35 years. Throughout my career I have continued with regular professional development, acquiring most of the certificates of competence in the trade. My qualifications culminate in the highly regarded ABC Level 4 Technical Certificate in Arboriculture. As regards experience, I have had the privilege of working at a number of high profile sites in London, but I have also maintained trees and shrubs in private properties, companies and schools throughout London, Essex and Kent. Being locally based allows me to personally oversee tree work onsite, answer clients' questions and give you peace of mind that contracted work is receiving a comprehensive, quality service. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, and repeat business is the key to our success so every visit to your home or premises is treated with the utmost importance by our staff.

Even though some trees are tall and majestic, there are times when they need to be removed completely.

Here is the OTS team dismantling a conifer tree. Unfortunately the tree had split in a couple of places due to high winds - in some images you will see straps we used to secure the tree during the process.

Now is the perfect time for trimming many evergreens, such as box and yew. For fast-growing hedges, like privet or leylandii, a trim at this time of year is the first of potentially three trims: with further trims in early summer and late summer/autumn.

Always check for nesting birds before hedge trimming, as disturbing them is illegal. If you are in doubt, call in the professionals.

What is pollarding?
Pollarding is a way to keep trees at a controlled size by cutting back their upper branches to a set point. This encourages new growth each year and helps the tree maintain a structured shape.

This method is especially useful in cities and small spaces where trees can't grow freely. It prevents them from getting too big or interfering with buildings, roads, or power lines. When done correctly, pollarding trees promotes strong, healthy growth while making maintenance much easier.
