• Plant early potatoes in trenches or large tubs.
🌿 Tidy Up Borders

February jobs to do in the Garden
🌱. 1 Sow seeds
Start seeds indoors for lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and early flowers.
If the weather is mild and the soil is unfrozen and well-drained, you can sow hardy crops outdoors, think broad beans or hardy salads.
Use a propagator or warm windowsill for heat-loving seedlings.
🥔. 2 Chit Early Potatoes
Place seed potatoes in egg boxes or seed trays “eyes” facing upwards.
Leave them in a cool, bright, frost fr place place to sprout before planting in March.
🌹.3 Plant Bare-Root Roses & shrubs
February is ideal for planting bare-foot roses, fruit bushes, hedging, and trees.
Do this only when the soil is workable not waterlogged or frozen.
Water In well and mulch after planting.
✂️. 4 Prune Dormant Plants
Finish pruning roses, wisteria, fruit trees (except stone fruit), and other dormant shrubs.
Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
Cut back late-flowering clematis to healthy buds.
🍂. 5 Mulch Beds & Boarders
Spread compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure.
Mulching helps suppress weeds, improve soil structure and retain moisture for the growing season.
🧼. 6 Tidy & clean post and equipment
Wash pots, seed trays, and tools to prevent disease.
Clean and reorganise your potting shed or staging area.
Check that seed-sowing equipment (labels, compost, pots) is ready to go.
🌼. 7 Order seeds, Bulbs & supplies
Plan your garden layout and order summer flowering bulbs (dahlias, lilies, gladioli), vegetable seeds, compost and supplies.
Early planning avoids stock shortages later in the season
