Hi all,
Just wanted to do a quick post highlighting the potential scams to be found on Facebook Marketplace regarding bikes and parts.
As most people are aware, cycling has had a huge upsurge over the past year with the Covid pandemic hitting worldwide, a lot of people have taken to cycling for exercise and transport. This, along with the closing of factories which produce parts etc has led to a GLOBAL shortage of parts, this hasn't just affected the UK. Brexit hasn't helped the situation and we're feeling the effects here in the UK with very little availability of parts, even basic things as brake and shift cables are very hard to get.
Unfortunately, this has led to a spate of thefts of bikes and parts off bikes, and you may have seen videos circulating on social media of gangs stealing bikes in central London.
The other issue to contend with is a rise in scam sales on FB marketplace. People are making fake profiles advertising the sale of bikes, groupsets, wheels and all other items for hugely discounted prices over retail, and it all seems an absolute bargain, that's because, as the saying goes, it's too good to be true, and most of these bargain items are scams using fake adverts and pictures taken off other sales listings.
If you find an item for sale on FB marketplace at a low price and you're interested, please do your due diligence and ask for pictures with today's date on it, or pictures of the item on the bike, close up pictures to verify etc.
If you get asked for payment via bank transfer for other means which aren't paypal or cash in hand then avoid and walk away and report the item and report the seller.
Please don't get scammed, there are too many of these dodgy people around and they seem to be getting away with it!
