The news is finally out!

Monday was a fabulous day when we finally got to reveal our project that we have been working on for over a year.

As the Planting Design Collective, myself, Sally-Anne Rees and Kate Campbell have designed a garden for at this years Chelsea flower show.

We’ve been working with so many incredible people on the project and we can’t wait to share all these stories over the coming months.

I’d love for you to come along on the journey with us so follow to see the garden take shape…

A new garden costs how much?!

If you’ve ever wondered what it actually costs to landscape a garden, the answer can be surprising.

I usually advise clients to expect prices to start from around £250 per square metre, with many projects coming in at £350–£500+ depending on complexity and finish.

A few reasons why costs are often higher than expected:
1. Much of the real work happens underground, with drainage, foundations and soil preparation that you never see once the garden is finished.

2. Garden builds rely on skilled labour and multiple trades, which significantly affects cost and these costs are rarely shown on popular garden makeover shows.

3. Quality materials, plants and good soil quickly add up, especially when building for longevity rather than quick fixes.

4. Waste removal, tight access and working around occupied homes all increase time and expense, particularly in urban gardens.

5. Proper construction upfront helps avoid failures, repairs and costly remedial work later on.

Down with building boring gardens! When planning a garden makeover not everything needs to be made from brand new materials. Retaining walls made from breeze blocks and render are high maintenance and offer nothing for the bio-diversity in your garden.

For this project we build small section of the wall using reclaimed materials from within the garden. The uneven surface will be planted with small plants and over time will become an important habitat for the insects and creatures we desperately need in our city gardens.

It’s fantastic to finish the year with the hard landscaping complete on this really special design job in Wimbledon.

I was tasked by my fabulous client to reimagine a section of her well established suburban garden to tie in with the new outdoor office building which felt out of place in the existing garden.

The garden was already full of interesting detailing, including old film props and sculptures so the new elements be added needed to complement this eclectic mix of features as well as fitting with the new contemporary office building.

We used corten steel to create new retaining steps and to new feature archway and trellis.

Beautiful charred oak setts from added interesting texture and complimented buff sandstone planks.

We also created a new retaining wall with reclaimed materials found around the garden. (Dan from Oakley landscapes even let me help build it, so I could cast my ‘designers eye’)

It of course wouldn’t be possible without the incredibly skilled and professional landscapers to bring the design to life, did a fantastic job!

I’m really looking forward to adding the planting to the space in the new year.

For our planted border as part of ‘All About Asteraceae’ feature at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, we set out to showcase the incredible range of ‘Fabulous Foliage’ in the Asteraceae plant family.

Throughout the week, visitors have been surprised and fascinated by the diverse variety of plants, including the architectural majesty of Artichoke, Dahlias popping with vibrant flowers offset by moody dark leaves and silver-toned Artemisia with its ethereal feathery foliage.

Thanks to and for the gorgeous photography.

For the last few months, have had an exciting project in the works. As graduates of we were invited to submit designs for a border planting design for Hampton Court Flower Festival celebrating the Asteraceae plant family. Since graduating we have kept in regular contact to support each other in our businesses so this felt like the perfect opportunity to collaborate.

Our border is titled ‘Asteraceae: Fabulous Foliage’ and encourages visitors to consider a foliage-first planting mindset that can create fabulous planting schemes which can hold their own before the first flowers bloom and long after they have faded.

Our border is one of 7 in the Asteracaea showcase and we are super excited to be working alongside studio

Stay tuned for updates from the show which is open from 2nd to 7th July!
