BATHROOM REVEAL

Ann Jones from South Manchester needed to move her bedroom and bathroom downstairs as her MS was making stairs increasingly challenging and a stair lift wasn’t an option.

The solution was to convert the former downstairs lounge/study into an accessible ensuite master bedroom. Ann started work with Becky .interiors on the interior design and reached out to Fine & Able to supply aesthetically pleasing accessible products for the bathroom. Ann’s main requirements were:

• The ability for her home hairdresser to wash Ann’s hair in the basin
• Flexibility to add additional grab rails as her MS progresses
• Space for her dressing table within the bathroom
• A clean look
• Easy access between the bedroom and bathroom

The design and product mix for Ann’s bathroom was developed to include:

• Fine & Able’s best-selling SurfaceHold wall-mounted basin with integrated handgrips, a ‘kitchen style tap’, and illuminated mirror above
• Grab rails around the toilet to support Ann in getting to her dressing table when she is not using her wheelchair
• A level access shower with chrome grab rails, shower seat, storage niches at Ann’s ideal heights
• A handheld shower hose and control panel that can be operated at the basin by the hairdresser

On a recent holiday to Portugal Ann reported that while she was having a great time and the weather was excellent, she was missing her new home bathroom and couldn’t wait to get back to it!

NEW DESIGN!
One of the smaller bathrooms we have created a great looking accessible solution for. And with a door in such a tricky location it’s certainly one of the most awkwardly shaped spaces.

The shortest wall is just 1.4m and 0.70m wide at its narrowest, so we hope you agree that the solutions show that no space is too small or awkward for our talented accessible designers?!

J and D approached us soon after J's Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis and a recommendation from a specialist neuro-OT. Their brief was to renovate the existing first floor bathroom in their three-storey, Edwardian home in South London to create an attractive, accessible wetroom that would enable them to stay in their home for as long as possible.

The key design considerations for this space were:
- Removing the bath and installing a level access wetroom
- Incorporating a higher toilet
- Space saving solutions including a wall-mounted foldaway shower seat, hinged grab rails, a bi-folding shower screen, a cloakroom basin and wall-mounted storage

Products used include:
- Essense shower seat in white
- Bliss bi-folding shower screen
- Platina digital shower valve
- Modale shower handset kit and rainwater shower, heated towel rail, comfort lever mini basin tap, accessories and storage
- Freestyle fixed and hinged grab rails in chrome
- Vesta long-projection toilet
- Codec while matt porcelain and Twelvenoon floor and wall tiles
- Consilio wall hung basin
- Front lit LED mirror

Watch this space for an update on J and D's second project, an accessible downstairs cloakroom and let us know if you have a small and awkward space that you'd like us to work our magic on!

It’s all in the details. Right down to the flush! Our Vesta and Consilio close-coupled toilets both feature a raised flush button to make it easier to push. This little extra height is barely noticeable in the look and feel of your bathroom but makes it easier to find, and press down, even with limited strength or dexterity.

It’s these little features you can find across Fine & Able’s whole range. Everything is there for a reason. So, when you buy something from Fine & Able you know has been curated by our team of experts to be beautiful, as well as functional.

As many wheelchair users experience, when moved into her two-storey house in Lancashire the upstairs bathroom and en-suite did not meet her access needs or modern luxurious style.

She couldn’t get her knees under the basins because they were mounted on top of cabinets, and the small door openings to the shower cubicles required a “leap of faith" from her wheelchair onto a “pretty un-sturdy shower chair” every time she took a shower.

Sophie decorated the rest of her home in her personal style and added a platform lift, but her bathrooms were lagging behind until she discovered us on Instagram!

She says of her newly renovated bathrooms:

“I think they look incredible. They're definitely my style of living in a little bit of luxury as I don't think just because you need something accessible that it should be anything less than a gorgeous bathroom.”

“The consultation process was really fun! It was great that Fine & Able were fully on board with listening to what I needed and creating spaces that are as accessible and perfect for my needs as possible.” - Sophie Carrigill.

enjoyed chatting with our accessible designer about how she would use the spaces so that all the bathroom features could be positioned to make her life as easy as possible.

She also loved getting to choose how she wanted the bathrooms to look and playing around with colour schemes and tile options.

To help visualise designs, products, and finishes, the Fine & Able design service comes with full 3D renders and technical drawings, like these (scroll to see them all).

With two bathrooms to design, Sophie wanted each to have a unique look and feel.

The Luminous Lume Green Gloss wall tiles laid in a herringbone pattern with white grout in the main bathroom were inspired by ’s Insta famous Fine & Able bathroom.

While in the en-suite, subtle interest has been created by the tonally patterned Codec wall tiles in Cementine.

Other key design details are smart storage solutions in the form of shower niches in contrasting tile finishes, niches beside the toilet in the en-suite for easy access to personal hygiene products, and integrated built-in shelving, and built-in tiled shower benches inspired by a visit to a luxury hotel and spa.

Let us know which feature you’d love to incorporate into your own bathroom in the comments.

Here they are…

Not one, but two gorgeous accessible bathrooms for Paralympic wheelchair basketball player !

Designed for independence and with Sophie’s modern luxurious sense of style in mind, we think these bathrooms are a perfect example of function meeting form.

“I would absolutely recommend Fine & Able to other disabled people as it's been such a straightforward process, and now the finished result is two amazing luxurious bathrooms that I love.” - Sophie

The fabulously festive December issue of magazine not only includes Christmas gift and decorating inspiration, but also a stunning four-page spread on ’s ‘Functional and Stylish’ Fine & Able bathroom. The feature includes sumptuous new photographs of Sophie’s bathroom, top tips on creating your own accessible bathroom, as well as the full bathroom sourcebook.

Accessible bathrooms may not seem very Christmasy, but it’s actually the time of year we receive the most enquiries. Lots of our customers tell us that when visiting friends and family during the holiday season, they are often confronted by how access needs have progressed throughout the year and how unsafe their homes have become – particularly with older relatives.

So we find people getting in touch about things like how to design accessible wetrooms that can accommodate a wheelchair, and products like shower seats, grab rails, and wash and dry toilets.

If this sounds familiar, why not pick up and share this Christmassy copy of Ideal Home to show how good-looking an accessible bathroom can be!
