Duchy Gardens

Duchy Gardens Hi, i’m Ed and i’ve been doing planting schemes, garden maintenance, landscaping and garden design in north Cornwall for 15 years.

I’d love to help with your garden: [email protected] / 07875069217.

Before and after at a garden on the north Cornwall coast that was a building site, but with TLC and some planting it came back to life beautifully over a few years.

Yew tree hedge planting in Rock, late 2023. 44 trees, each approx 70kg, 2 metres high, c. £150 each. Planted into a hand-dug trench approx 60cm x 45cm. It was about a week's work in total including receiving delivery and handling. The trees were then watered regularly to maximise root development. The last two photos are in the summer of 2024, no losses, all trees remain in good health.

Trying to get a Cornish hedge to look natural and full of colour is tricky and can take a couple of years of nuturing, especially in exposed coastal locations teeming with rabbits that either eat the growth or dig out the roots. Cut stems need to be left for a while to allow as many seeds as possible to find their way into the soil. Eventually this is the sort of effect you get, informal, colourful and beautiful. These photos were taken earlier this year.

Recent tasks have included cutting wildflower meadows and lawns. The meadow pictured is cut once or twice a year using a customer-supplied quad-bike with two separate pieces of machinery, first a flail which cuts the wildflowers and grasses and leaves it all to dry in the meadow, then a collector is used a few days later once seeds from the cuttings have found their way down to the ground. The collecting has to be done to keep the meadow's fertility low, otherwise it will get taken over by brambles, nettles and agricultural grasses which prevent wildflowers from growing.

This was also in Boscastle, from 2014. It involved replacing a rough lawn with a corner shed and a multi-level bubble design for flower beds, with the remainder being local gravel. It was a lot of work but the customers were really pleased with the end results. It's one of the design+builds i'm most proud of, it looked far better than i could have imagined.

A 4 metre diameter pond built into a slope in 2013. The area was previously a sloped lawn. I built up a retaining buttress, dug the pond and used the soil to make everything level. Then i lined the pond and used slate slabs from around the garden to weigh the liner down, then it was planted up. I did similar things to the garden which i'll post separately.

This was a bare, discused veggie garden with a concrete surround which the customer wanted brought back to life. My suggestion was a corner summerhouse facing the sun big enough for a couple of chairs, a few books, a radio and a kettle. Either side i constructed pergolas to allow climbers over the paths, and garden screens to enclose the remaining open sides. The veggie areas were then planted. I did this project in winter 2018, and the photo with the flowers was sent by very happy customers in the summer of 2019. I hope you like it, is shows what is possible with a bit of imagination.

Back in 2019 with the help of David from Millennium Plants, this coastal garden was replanted with over a thousand plants. This was because the exposure means some species really struggle to survive. So these pics show some of the plants, after which there were many days of planting into the really tough stony ground using pickaxes.
