This week it was time to dead head the lilac. I wish they lasted longer as the perfume is delicious and they look stunning.

When deadheading it’s important to only cut back to where you see a cluster of leaves UNLESS you are reshaping the tree.

Lilac flower on the previous years growth so if you chop thst off you miss flowers the following year.

If you need to drastically reduce the tree you either bite the bullet and accept you won’t have flowers the following year OR you can cut a third of the branches so you still get two thirds with flowers, then do another third the following year and so forth.

Top tip for you while we have this very hot weather.

I use an old pop bottle with the bottom cut out and push it upside down into the soil next to my tomatoes. I secure it with a bamboo cane. When I water, I fill the pop bottle up and it will slowly drain down into the soil near to the tomato roots AND I know exactly how much water they have had.

This one is a 3 litre old lemonade bottle. At the moment with soaring temperatures I’m watering every other day and the plant gets 3 litres. Tomatoes really need consistency with watering. If you forget and give them a huge water after a drought you could end up with the fruits splitting or get blossom end rot.

Another top tip is to provide some shade at the sunniest point of the day. My greenhouse hit 44 today! That’s too much for things like cucumbers and aubergines, a little shade helps the water loss through evaporation. Im using sheets of paper to screen but have ordered some proper greenhouse shading fabric which goes over the greenhouse and will be much easier to manage.

There’s always something you need. 😃

Tomato plants now ready for collection.

These seedlings must not be planted out yet, wait until at least the first week in May to avoid late frosts, unless they are going into a heated greenhouse.

Keep them on a sunny window ledge and watch them grow.

Available this year:

• Sunchocola - red/chocolate brown flesh with a slight smoky, sweet tangy flavour

• Sungold – exquisitely sweet, small yellow orange tomatoes.

• Sweet Million – heavy cropper producing delicious shiny cherry sized tomatoes
Stripey - a salad sized tomato with yellow/orange stripes
Principle Borghese - Italian vine tomato with small yegg shaped fruits. Ideal for salads. Great
St. Pierre - traditional and tasty French heirloom variety with large and quite fleshy tomatoes. Very prolific, belong to the beefsteak varieties
Shimmer -an attractive looking tomato with bronze and light red streaks. More conical shape. Slightly larger than a cherry tomato.

All varieties are £1.00 each or 6 for £5

No im not going crazy posting Christmas wreaths for sale. I just wanted to show you my wreath made in November2025.

No Ive not had it on my house door all this time. I put it on my shed door after Christmas

Why, well when I make Christmas wreaths one of the questions I get asked a lot is ‘Will it last until Christmas’ and ‘do I need to keep it sprayed with water’.
Well as you can see this is now 4 months old and has never been sprayed with water unless it caught a rain shower. So YES, your Christmas wreath will last long after Christmas without any care or attention.
Guess I now need to strip it down and remove it, shame, it still looks good. 😊
