Tree Removal – Large Mature Poplar in Oxfordshire
Unfortunately, we have to remove a large and mature Poplar tree that has become severely compromised by Ganoderma (a fungal root and butt rot).
Why removal is necessary:
• Ganoderma causes hidden internal decay at the base and roots, making the tree structurally unstable.
• It significantly increases the risk of the tree failing in wind or storms, potentially causing serious damage to property, fences, or nearby structures.
• Once advanced (as in this case), there is no effective treatment — the fungus slowly destroys the wood from the inside.
This is a classic example of why regular tree inspections matter. Poplars are fast-growing but can be particularly susceptible to this type of decay.
What we’re doing:
• Safe, controlled dismantling of the entire tree (sectional felling where needed).
• All infected wood will be properly disposed of (not chipped on site for mulch).
If you have mature trees on your property (especially poplars, oaks, maples, or similar), keep an eye out for signs of Ganoderma:
• Shelf-like fungal brackets (conks) at the base of the trunk
• Thinning canopy, yellowing/wilting leaves, or dead branches
• Cracks or swelling near the root flare
Early detection can sometimes allow for management, but once the brackets appear, action is often required for safety.
