Late summer colour brought to us by a mix of faded flower heads, seedheads and grasses. Although the “reds and yellows” generally are on the ‘no thank you’ list, they can look great when planted with contrasting backgrounds as seen here in my own garden. I always try to encourage clients to keep an open mind with the ‘no thank you’ list! I’ve used Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Firetail’, Achillea ‘Terracotta’, grass Calamagrostis ‘Karl foerster’ and bronze fennel. This display will carry on well into October.

What better way to increase your plants than by taking cuttings. Here Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’ cuttings have been taken. Remember non flowering shoots, cut just below a leaf node. Water and leave to root. Once roots appear, separate the cuttings and pot on into 9cm pots. Once grown on, will then be ready to plant out into the garden in autumn. What could be easier and of course cheaper-plants for free!!

Late summer colour Not everyone’s favourite colour palette but when planted with different colours other than yellows and oranges I think it results in a wow factor.
Here we have rudbeckia, alstroemeria, pink salvia, kniphofia and dahlias (bishop varieties with the dark leaves) Easy to pick some colours from.
Here to replicate in your own gardens for late season colour.

Who remembers the tiny pink flowers of this bindw**d? A meadow plant reminiscent of childhood… funny how a w**d is now cultivated into our gardens in the form of the ipomoea - Morning glory. A popular tender annual climbing plant that comes in a beautiful blue form amongst other colours.

A visit to in early July - the NGS open day. The fields are awash with all the vibrant colours of perennials, annuals and shrubs used for cutting. Hardy annuals that can be sown in September for early flowering the following year, and I believe seeds will become available from September.
