Who’s putting a new kitchen in?
If you are doing the electrical work to suit the new layout be very careful.
Technically the regs require that all isolators for devices such as Cookers, washing machines, dishwashers and rubble drivers etc etc must be easily accessible ideally above the work surface directly above the appliances however kitchen fitters are asked to hide these isolators so some just fit sockets for these appliances behind the kitchen units WRONG even if they are at the back of the cupboard with holes cut out for access this is a NO NO. Why because cupboards are used to store kitchen gear and in an emergency these items block the person who is trying turn it off because of fire or someone getting a shock etc.
So you may ask where can I put these isolators if the client wants them hidden?
NICEIC AND NAPIT say you can fit the inside a cupboard at the front hinge side for easy access but they don’t mean a cupboard miles away from the appliance (it has to be close).
So what happens if you arrive and the kitchen fixers have installed the cables and boxes for you then fitted the Kitchen units over them.
According to the tech guys at NAPIT you can isolate these and fact all the kitchen appliances in this situation by turning off the MCB for that circuit that is of course assuming the consumers unit is very close and is EASILY located NOT in a cupboard that has little access or is too high or two low in a cupboard under the stairs.
If the the customer unit is in a cupboard it must have lighting in there so that work or isolation can be clearly and safely taken place.

Hi folks
It must be tempting to feed an outside device using twin and earth cable perhaps pinned along fences to a hut or even flexible cable as used in extension leads, I’ve even seen this cable put in a hose pipe. PLEASE DON’T DO THIS.
First of all fences move over time be it from wind weather etc. This will eventually damage the cable.
Even the use of extension leads should be with an RCD backing it up, without this people are at risk of electrical shock if there is a fault in your device be it lawn mower hedge trimmer etc or just a frayed cable on damp grass or by just picking it up.
The RCD can be one installed in your fuse board or if you do not have one in your board a separate RCD that you plug your appliance into.
Make sure you have an RCD that trips at 30 milliamperes.
If you have a fuse-board that has an RCD do not use a plug in one as well because you may not know which one would trip.
Concerning shed or garage supplies ensure a professional does the electrical calculations regarding volt drop and cable capacity and type.
Armoured cable should be run underground at the depth stated in the current electrical regulations.
Note that people who undertake DIY electrical work do not take these important factors into consideration and just run inappropriate cables installed incorrectly into out buildings then load up the sockets or fuse boards causing damage to cables.
Remember folks keep safe electricity can be very dangerous
Take care
More on this later.

What is a SPD device and do I need one ??
SPD is a surge protection device so what does this mean?
What surges are they talking about ? a surge is an increase in voltage that you would normally get within your premises for example most domestic houses have 230 volts AC where industrial or commercial will have a perhaps 3 phase system which is 3 x 230 volt supplies.
So if there is an increase in that voltage there is a a strong possibility that some or all of your electronic equipment televisions, computers, alarms, CCTV, DVD, players etc etc could be damaged or destroyed.
That’s where the SPD comes in it shorts the surge voltage down to earth therefore preventing it from reaching your sensitive equipment.

What causes these surges and who are most at risk?

Top of the list are premises that have TT systems these are premises that are fed via an overhead supply and are earthed via a local earth electrode outside the house. Overhead line may be struck by lightning and this can send a very high voltage to your premises which can cause the damage to items mentioned above. However this surge of voltage can arc across to an earthed box or structure and cause fires.

Premises close to local transformers can also be at risk due to lightning strikes.

Some incidents have been recorded when external light fitting and CCTV cameras have been struck by lightning.

I HOPE THIS POST HAS HELPED SOME OF YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT A SPD IS.
Please press like if it has.

The next post will be about a device that can be fitted that detects arcing which is a prime cause of fires in premises
