The benefits of an organised home

We’ve all heard the saying "Tidy home, tidy mind " and its many variants. The saying actually dates back to around 1947, back in the day when women generally stayed at home. It was almost a sign that you 'had it together' if your home was organise

d and polished to within an inch of its life but, in today’s modern society, things are very different. If you’re not convinced here’s why this life philosophy does actually work:

1. Clutter Creates Chaos
If you are constantly surrounded and overwhelmed with clutter, your mind will start to feel the same way. Think back to those mornings when you couldn’t find your purse or your car keys and remember how you left the house later than normal. The traffic had built up, you sat in jams and you had to explain to your colleagues at work why you were late. You were constantly playing catch up all day. Which brings us on to...

2. Stress causes friction in the home
A Kitchen full of dirty dishes, a bedroom floor covered in clothes, these are all' jobs to be done'. If you find yourself constantly picking up after others it can start to drain you and your emotions, arguments start and everyone is cross. Changing our habits now and preventing the build up of mess in the first place can reduce the negative way we treat each other as a family.

3. Children pick up bad habits
It’s so important that parents teach children good habits and get them to help out around the house, even just keeping their bedrooms tidy or making their beds, is an important life lesson for their future.

4. Work and home life are harder to separate
Coming home from work and having to do another 3 hours’ work on tidying the house is not good for any of us. With a little organisation, this can be improved, meaning you have time to actually relax.

5. You won’t feel refreshed surrounded by mess
Part of looking after our mental health is being able to take time out. Our homes should be our place of sanctuary, always calm and relaxing not surrounded by clutter. The whole concept of being organised gives us so many benefits. Small habit changes weaved into your day to day routine will soon become second nature and they can be done even if you think you don’t have the time. An organised and tidy home will have so many positive effects on your well-being, relationships and state of mind. If you can remove the clutter from your life and streamline your processes at home this will have a huge positive effect on every aspect of your life and I can help you achieve it

Last Friday I spent half a day with an existing client decluttering and then organising her loft space, its fascinating how much emotional weight ends up stored in those kinds of areas.

Lofts become holding spaces for years of life. Old plans. Forgotten projects. Things we meant to come back to “when things calm down a bit”.

Dreams go to lofts to die if you’re not careful.

What really pleased me though was something my client said while we were working. She told me that since we started working together a few years now she and her husband argue much less about the house! The spaces we’ve organised have stayed that way, and she feels far more confident tackling other areas herself because she understands the process behind it now.

Then she said she often catches herself thinking
“What would Jo say?”

I laughed but honestly, that’s the goal to be frank.

Because I never want people to rely on me forever. I want them to learn the skills, trust their decisions and feel calmer in their own homes long after I’ve left.

A tidy loft is great. A house that feels lighter to live in matters far more. For me that's the end goal

A lot of people assume they struggle with decluttering because they are disorganised, but honestly I think decision fatigue plays a much bigger role than people realise.

After a while, every object in your home starts carrying a question with it, and those tiny decisions become mentally exhausting. People are not just sorting belongings, they are sorting memories, guilt, future plans and old versions of themselves at the same time.

That is usually why people end up stopping halfway through a room and walking away feeling overwhelmed. It is rarely the physical work that wears people out. It is the constant mental load that comes with making hundreds of decisions in a short space of time.

When I work with my clients, I nearly always suggest starting somewhere easier first because building momentum matters. Expired toiletries, old paperwork or duplicate kitchen items are much easier to process than sentimental keepsakes. Once people realise they can make decisions without regretting them, the harder areas start to feel far less intimidating.

Often just one or two sessions is all it takes to get them started and on their way to decluttering and organising their homes.

One thing I have learnt from working in people’s homes is that more storage rarely fixes the problem people think it will fix.

Most homes already have enough cupboards, drawers and boxes, but over time they become filled with things nobody really uses, needs or even likes anymore.

People often spend money trying to organise belongings they have never properly decided to keep in the first place.

I always encourage my clients to declutter before buying a single storage basket or organiser because otherwise, the house simply absorbs more stuff. It might look tidier for a short while, but eventually the drawers become difficult to close again and surfaces slowly start filling back up.

A really useful exercise is to choose one small area and ask yourself whether you would genuinely buy each item again today.

This may sound simple but it helps cut through a lot of guilt and habit. I find most people realise fairly quickly that they are holding onto things out of routine rather than intention.

One of my boys described our home as “homely” the other day and honestly it brought a wee tear to my eye.

The last few years have not exactly been quiet ones. Divorce, rebuilding life , going fully self employed, parenting, money, routines and all the invisible mental load that comes with trying to keep everything moving forward on your own. Like most people, there have been times when I have looked around the house and only seen the jobs still left to do.

So hearing him say that stopped me in my tracks a bit.

Because I spend a lot of time in other people’s homes and I think we sometimes lose sight of what actually makes a home feel good to live in. People often think it is about having the perfect kitchen, immaculate cupboards or a house that always looks “done”. But children usually measure a home very differently. They care whether they can relax, whether things feel calm, whether they know where their favourite top is and whether home feels safe and comfortable.

I have worked in huge beautiful houses that felt tense and overwhelming to sit in and I have worked in homes with washing on the radiator and paperwork on the side that still felt warm the second you walked through the door.

That is why I never think decluttering is about creating a perfect insta house. Most people are not asking for perfection. They just want their home to feel lighter, easier to manage and nicer to live in.

Sometimes “homely” is the best compliment a home can get.

This drawer told us everything we needed to know. 😂

After helping this client tackle her wardrobe recently, she decided to make a start on the kitchen next.

And honestly… the amount of Calpol syringes she uncovered deserved their own dedicated section.

This is exactly why decluttering feels so overwhelming sometimes.
It’s rarely about being messy.

It’s about all the tiny things that quietly build up over time until one drawer somehow contains

• 7 Calpol syringes
• random cutlery
• utensils nobody recognises
• and things that definitely do not belong there

The good news?

You do not need to sort the entire house in one go.
One drawer
One cupboard
One small win at a time
That’s usually how the momentum starts.

Now be honest… how many Calpol syringes are currently living in your kitchen drawer? 😉

My youngest Jake sat and built this in two hours. No fuss. No overthinking. Just got on with it.

If you asked me to do the same, I’d still be staring at the instructions, wondering where to start.

That’s his thing, defo not mine.

When he’s in his zone, it’s easy. He knows what he’s doing and just cracks on.

I see this all the time with my decluttering clients. They’re brilliant at what they do. Running a home. Managing their work. Looking after everyone else.

But when it comes to their own space, that’s where it stalls.

Wardrobes half done. Cupboards full but still nothing to wear. Piles that just move from one room to another. Not because they can’t do it.

It’s just not their zone. Where they see mess, I see decisions.

Where they feel overwhelmed, I see a starting point.

What feels heavy to them is the bit I can move through quickly. Calmly. Without the second-guessing.

That’s the difference. It’s not about motivation. It’s about being in the right lane.

That’s where I come in.

To bring structure. Make decisions easier. Keep things moving. So they can get back to what they’re actually good at, without the constant background noise of clutter.

If your home feels like something you should sort but never quite get to, you’re not alone.

I offer a free 15-minute discovery call. Drop me a DM to arrange yours

Most wardrobes don’t get like this overnight... It builds slowly

* a house move
* “I’ll deal with it later” piles
* clothes that no longer fit your life
* decisions you keep putting off

Until one day it just feels… too much. That’s usually when I get the SOS message.

What we actually do isn’t just sorting clothes.

It’s:

* making clear decisions
* creating space that works day to day
* and removing that constant mental noise every time you open the door

The shift is always bigger than people expect.

Need help getting started, you know where to find me.
