Thursday and Friday this week was a mix of essential spring jobs:- tidying, weeding, mulching, pruning the hydrangeas and last wisteria and starting to plant up the new beds.
The wildflower areas were strimmed ready for seeding next time.

Tuesday and Wednesday was spent finishing edging and planting up a pond and marshland, installing some drainage and seeding the wildflower meadow.
The pond will be drained and refilled with rainwater and should settle now the plants and gravel are in.

What beautiful weather we had this week!
It was a busy one. This was Monday - pruning hydrangeas and admiring the previous planting designs coming into flower.

A change of tree!
The Acer griseum put in 3 years ago has not lived up to expectations and unfortunately, as it was the central focal point for the garden, had to be relocated. In the new position along the path, the sunlight will catch its beautiful bark and it can be admired up close. The replacement- an Acer Palmatum Red Emperor. This rarer variety leafs up a bit later than other varieties, offering better protection from late frosts. It also holds its glorious red colour longer than the well known Bloodgood.
It has been given the royal treatment in planting so hopefully it will establish well this year and be the centrepiece we hope it will be!

Hedge cutting and tackling this vegetable patch - getting it ready for spring planting. The raised beds were a mass of couch grass roots of which every fragment must be removed ! Next to finish the back bed and create an additional raised bed on the side to site the small glasshouse, which will be used to grow tomatoes, basil and cucumbers. I am growing garlic and onions in pots ready for transplanting next time. Spring is coming!

A lovely variety of hardy Hellebores planted today under hydrangeas, with a thick layer of mulch to get them settled in well. Hydrangeas were pruned and shaped but the old flowers left on many of the stems for a few more weeks yet to protect the new shoots. They will be removed in early March. On the other side of the path I have put in Sarcococcas to create a fragrant, evergreen, low border, in front of the laurel. Lovely to see the hundreds of bulbs I planted before Christmas starting to come through 😊

Bed preparation and moving trees, shrubs and this large rambler rose to new locations today. The sun came out briefly but it was a nice day to work anyway- mild, calm and dry!

Starting off the new year with this project. Enlarging an existing pond and creating a bog garden next to it with path between. The shelving and borders around will be planted in the coming weeks and the meadow areas in front and behind will be enriched to attract as much wildlife as possible. It's going to be fantastic!
