Big thank you to United Utilities teams who came out so quickly to help us with Stop Tap issues to assist us with Water Conservation across the Winter.

1920s taps and pipework on the Allotment make it a nightmare each year.

Important to us as there are chickens which need fresh water throughout the Winter and it's good to be able to make a brew when it's cold out there. Allotments don't shut down over Winter, there are veggies to grow and pick, tidying up to do and preparation :)

Plus toilets are kind of useful if they can flush in the cold weather ... we are getting there ... and continue to look for more ways and supporters to help with Water Conservation on site.

It's with great sadness that we share the news of Bernard Ogden passing away. Bernard had a plot at Weaste for nearly fifty years.

His plot being close to the main gates many plot holders enjoyed the giant bright colourful dahlias he grew. They were always a delight to see when walking onto the site.

Bernard was often the first one on in the mornings and always had time for a chat with others. With all those years on site came a great amount of knowledge which he was a very happy to share.

Some things stay with a person, and one of our plot holders recalled, Bernard was a Grenadier Guard and stood guard outside Buckingham Palace; he is fondly remembered for standing near the main gates most days kindly letting the early-birds in.

A passion of Bernard's was cycling and he would often in his younger days ride his racing bike to Blackpool and back just for fun. We never saw him cycling the road around the allotments, but who knows!!

He will be remembered as a true gentleman, a kind person and a friend to many, and he will be greatly missed at Weaste Allotments.

Our thoughts are with his family who have supported Bernard on his plot over the years.

Everything that is non-compostable or un-safe to burn has to be taken off site by plot holders. Re-cycling is encouraged and to see where and how the changes are made looks like a different half a day out :)

Love the sound of an ice cream van ... feels like warmer weather is here despite the thunder storms! A bit of a nightmare to run across the allotment, unlock the gate and get there before the van disappears, but oh so worth it when you can.
Understand how much this is enjoyable and brings great memories of Summer.

Often a person gets to the front of our Waiting List and sees the 10 x 12.5 metre half plot they are going to take on and well it's like a rabbit in headlights moment! Dazed, and wobbly, where to start?

New to producing their own fruit and veg, seduced by the ease of gardening on TV, but full of enthusiasm despite the overgrown or abandoned looking space in front of them.

This book could be the answer to their wonder about where to start once the plot is clear ... and the allotment committees too as it clearly shows how to use every bit of space for cultivation. the compost heap doubling as the growing space for squash which we've seen be very successful at Weaste on a number of plots. Squeeze in a water butt or two as well as - using soaker hoses from taps is not a possibility here :)

A trip to the local book shop or perhaps in time library or charity shop - could be the best £16.99 spent ...

Eat homegrown food all year round and save money on your weekly shop by following a simple plan for self-sufficiency.Huw Richards and Sam Cooper have spent the past two years planning and trialling their very own self-sufficiency garden in a 10x12.5m plot and now they've worked out the perfect formu...
