We are pleased to have completed the second phase of conservation work on the beautiful Victorian painted scheme at St James Church (Chapel of Ease).

Following last year’s treatment of the reredos, this phase focused on the wall areas of the chancel and included essential plaster repairs, removal of remaining overpaint from earlier interventions, cleaning, retouching, and final varnishing of the decorative scheme.

We are carrying out very interesting investigations in The Old Vic, London.

We at Chroma painted this beautiful room which was actually the late Queen’s bedroom in a private house of which she was a frequent visitor for many decades. It was completed not long before her parting and we were reliably informed that “Her Royal Highness was pleased with it and slept very well indeed!”
We painted the walls with Farrow and Ball eggshell then created a strong coral glaze using Polyvine scumble and Golden artists acrylics to be able to realise a “cross drag” effect. This is where one dragged glaze is applied horizontally and, when dry, the same glaze is applied vertically to achieve a finish similar to slub silk. We used an iridescent medium in the Polyvine varnish to help with this illusion.
We also restored, painted, gilded (with 23.5 carat gold leaf) and antiqued the William Kent mirror and flanking eagles with swags. The woodwork was finished with an antique drag and stipple.
