No chill on the allotment 😂

13/05/2026

Yesterday I opened my shed door on the allotment to find a small golf ball sized wasp’s nest, with a single wasp buzzing around.

I did some research and found that it was constructed by a queen wasp, who had come out of hibernation and started building a new home for her colony.

I hate to kill any insects or even slugs, so I got my dad to knock down the nest whilst it’s still in its infancy.

I’ve read that she may rebuild it in a similar position. I’m hoping she’s buggered off to another persons shed instead 😂

The stunning gardens of Powis Castle 🌿

Perched above the Severn Valley, these gardens have been shaped over centuries.

Originally laid out in the 17th century under the Herbert family, the gardens evolved from formal terraces into something truly unique. Their dramatic Italianate terraces are among the finest in Britain, carved into the hillside and softened over time with yew, and seasonal colour.

Later influences, including the passion of 20th-century gardeners, brought in rare plants and a more naturalistic feel.

Well worth a visit 🌼👍🏼

The realities of being on the allotment in April. Lots of hiding in the greenhouse away from the showers 🌧️

It’s nice and cosy in here, and surprisingly warm 😄😎

A little reminder that nature doesn’t always follow the rules… 🌸

Out on the allotment today and spotted this mix of blue, pink and white bluebells all growing together. At first glance you might think they’re just different varieties, but it’s actually a sign of hybridisation at work 👀

Our native bluebells are usually that deep, rich violet-blue you see carpeting ancient woodlands. But when they cross with Spanish bluebells, you start to get these softer shades… pinks, whites, and paler blues all in one place.

Still beautiful, just telling a slightly different story 🌿

A good reminder to slow down, look a little closer, and notice what’s really growing around you.

So happy to see the hard work paying off! One of my projects on the allotment this year is to introduce more wildlife friendly areas. One of these being a new pond.

I dug it out over the past few days, added the liner and half filled it with rainwater thinking I’ll continue to fill it up as I go.

Today I’ve looked in the pond and Mr Isaac Newton as moved in 🦎 (he can leave via a ramp on the other side of the pond) I currently have some pond plants establishing which will be ready to move into the water in April. Hoping to attract damsel flies, frogs 🐸 and more birds to the plot over the summer ☀️

Early March on the allotment. Brighter days filled with seedlings, crocus, daffodils, and ladybirds ❤️☀️ 🌼🐞
