Wow, the weather's a bit bonkers at the moment! I hope you've all been enjoying the sunshine! Feeling like I've got the best job in the world when it's like this, which makes up for some of the more gruelling days of winter. I popped back to Lou and Ash's garden today for some maintenance. The front border was planted in July 2023 and is really taking off this spring. In fact. I may have to bring it back into line by the time we reach autumn (note euphorbia on steroids!).
It was an unloved patch when I first visited. Ash and Lou were a bit embarrassed about how it made the front of the house look, especially when compared with their neighbours'. I loved that the border is on a bit of a slope, so there's plenty of opportunity for all plants to benefit from lots of sunlight, and it would lend itself to layering with larger, more statuesque shrubs and trees towards the back. There is a weeping silver birch we planted which will look incredible once established, plus a magnolia 'Susan', a ceanothus and a rugosa rose. With some more height, in time they'll hold their own at the back of the border. I also loved that the border is raised with brick edging which meant I could incorporate rockery style plants which spill over the edge, softening the hard landscaping. I had to factor in deep shade one end of the border and full sun the other. This required different planting either end which would still work in a unified way overall. The fence is still looking a bit exposed at the moment, but we've planted some clematis montana 'Ruebens' which will cloak it nicely over time. Enjoy the Before and After photos! I've included plants for all seasons, so it'll be worth a revisit later in the year when it'll probably look quite different
