KnoxHowell Architects are on the move!

It’s been an incredible two years in Cowes. A huge thank you to Nick Joyce at for our collaborative working project. It was a fantastic starting point, but as we’ve evolved, it became clear we needed a space that offered an easier commute and a dedicated environment to host our clients.

When we started looking for a new studio, we had a strict checklist.

Our new home needed to offer:

Space to Grow- We needed sufficient room for our team, a great setup to host clients, and the potential to sublet an area for work-share space for like minded businesses.

Architectural Soul- The building we work in is a reflection of our business. It needed to be interesting, have character, and hold architectural significance.

Client Accessibility- It had to be stress-free for visitors, easy to reach, parking right outside, and no battling through heavy traffic.

A Vibrant Community- Too often, office spaces can feel sterile and disconnected. We wanted an environment where businesses come together and interact.

We are super excited to announce that we found exactly what we were looking for on Clarence Road, East Cowes!

Our new home is a stunning Grade II listed Georgian terrace that gives us plenty of room to grow. We are right next door to some fantastic small businesses, and there is parking right out front.

Even better, it’s highly convenient for the team with all of us having an easy commute to the studio.

We will certainly miss being right in the heart of Cowes among so many great businesses, but it served as the perfect launchpad for us.

This is an exciting new chapter, and we can’t wait to welcome clients into our new home very soon!

We will post updates of the space as it evolves.

We are working closely with on this new build house in Gurnard.

Knowing that this house was having some bedrooms at ground floor with large windows on the southern and western facades, we designed in overhanging first floor volumes to combat issues with overheating that provide vital solar shading.

We should be designing buildings utilising passive strategies rather than rely on measures such as air-conditioning or expensive solar control glazing systems.

Part O is a relatively new building regulation and the awareness of it's impact at an early stage in the design process is often critical to avoid issues during the technical design phase.

We are excited for this to start on site in the next couple of months.

PLANNING APPROVED

After years of failed negotiations on design with other designers we were tasked to provide a fresh approach to the former Fitness Factory site in Newport.

The site lies adjacent to the conservation area and was constrained by it's tight plot, access and visibility issues.

Our approach was to firstly persuade the planning authority of the importance of the corner and it's hierarchical presence to the street scene and context. We successfully justified 3 storeys and stepping the mass down to meet the existing Portland Street terracing. We then redesigned the entrance point to provide greater access to the parking area. The design reflects the historical facades but with some contemporary embellishments.

This development will provide attainable housing in a town centre location providing parking and concealed bin storage preserving the historical town centre setting.

Through our approach of collaboration and design justification we achieved the consent first time.

PLANNING SUBMITTED

We are pumped to have submitted an application for an entirely new first floor to this chalet bungalow in St Lawrence.

The existing bungalow had an awkward floor plan with constrained spaces at first floor that never took enough advantage of the epic sea views or it's stunning mature tree and rocky landscape. The location has promoted a lot of Mediterranean planting that has inspired the feel of the work.

The clients are inspired by minimalist architecture so we have worked hard with several rounds of testing and interrogation of the design until we have reached this point.

Due to the area being prone to land slippage, we have opted to remove the existing roof and first floor and replaced with lightweight construction utilising the existing foundations. This will save time and cost in the ground. Budget control has driven every choice including minimising disturbance to the ground floor and maximising the existing spaces.

We are really excited for this to move to the next stage of its development.

Planning Submitted.

Following a client led appeal on a previous design we were instructed to submit a fresh application for a new dwelling that will be a self build.

The contemporary cottage uses lower cost materials and a simple form to keep control of cost that and a material pallet that will fit within the sites tree dominated streetscape and help it blend into its context.

The material pallet of Shou sugi ban cladding and metal roof is extremely resilient and has great fire retardant properties that's makes it suitable near the boundary.

We are looking forward to seeing this progress.

We were asked by our client to amend the design of a chalet bungalow that gained planning permission on appeal. Outlr client purchased the site with permission with a design undertaken by another designer.

Through a variation of condition application (S73) we have made the building larger, changed the materials, added new dormer windows and given the house a feature entrance and double height hallway with feature glazing.

We look forward to this starting on site in the coming weeks.

Things are starting to happen on this bungalow extension. Extending vertically with a whole new roof to take advantage of the views.

The tin-hat will mean work will not be hindered by the weather! Despite today being absolutely glorious! We all know that's rarely the case.

PLANNING GRANTED

Last week we gained consent for a development of 5 houses on a beautiful site in St Helens on the Isle of Wight overlooking Brading Marshes.

The site was ecologically sensitive so our approach was to to enhance and preserve this through the mechanism of onsite Biodiversity Net Gain enhancement on site as well as off site financial contributions. This was decided to increase the sites financial viability for a future developer. The onsite enhancements enriches the sites sense of place and sensitively grounds the development within its rural setting.

The site has been strategically designed to ensure views are allowed through retained trees across to the Marshes and beyond whilst advoiding issues with future flood risk imposed by the Environment Agency and IWCC.

We are excited to see who takes this site on.

PLANNING GRANTED

We have achieved consent for demolition of a bungalow on Worsley Rd in Gurnard that had been poorly added and altered over the years.

Our client wanted a striking new form that was designed to take advantage of the far reaching sea views and provide sufficient uplift in internal floor area to provide 4 bedroom with ensuites.

Due to the vista being to the north we opted for a dual aspect living space on ground floor that allows light to permeate through the plan. I subtle change in level allows the house to follow the topography of the site and delineates the front and rear spaces.

Overhangs and balconies provide shading from the summer sun in a bid to cool the house passively rather through mechanical ventilation and air conditioning.

Planning has been submitted for a writers beachut in Seaview. Consent had already been granted and implemented for a much larger structure which had several conditions attached to it including only being allowed to build between May and October which would have been hugely disruptive to locals and holiday makers during the peak season.

We opted for a prefabricated solution that will be manufactured here on the Island and craned onto screw pile stilts in only a couple of days.

The structure has been designed for it's coastal location with robust waterproof detailing and materials that are resistant to the harsh environment.
