Homeowner Tree Inspection: What to Look Out For🌳
You don’t need to be an arborist to spot early warning signs that something isn’t right with your trees. A quick walk around your garden every now and then can help prevent bigger (and more expensive) problems down the line.
Although sometimes you can’t always see what’s going on inside a tree or under the ground, here’s a simple checklist you can follow 👇
🔍 Check the base (roots & soil)
- Look for lifting soil, cracks, or exposed roots
- Fungal growth, can be a sign of decay
🌿 Inspect the trunk
- Cracks, splits, or hollow sections
- Peeling bark or areas that look dead
- Oozing sap or unusual marks
🍂 Look up at the canopy
- Dead or hanging branches
- Sparse leaves or uneven growth
- Leaves discoloured, spotted, or dropping early
🦠 Watch for pests & disease
- Holes in leaves or bark
- Unusual growths or swelling
- Sticky residue or black spots on leaves
🌬️After strong winds
- Check for newly leaning trees
- Broken or partially snapped limbs
⚠️ If something doesn’t look right, don’t ignore it. Small issues can turn into safety hazards if left unchecked.
