Tips for June
June is just around the corner, when Summer is supposed to arrive !
June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions, or call me in to do it for you! 07930 576321

Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside
Choose vibrant bedding plants for a short-term show or herbs, shrubs and evergreens for a long-lasting display.

Pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes
Removing the side-shoots is simple – every time you water, check the plant for any shoots sprouting just above each leaf, from the joint between the leaf and the stem.

Cut and come again salads
Produce your own mixed salads by growing a range of leafy salads and vegetables that can be cut and will then sprout (come) again. Harvesting the young leaves when you need them prevents plants from maturing and ensures several harvests of small, tender, mild-flavoured leaves over a long period of time.

Mow lawns at least once a week – or call me in to do that for you 07930 576321

Plant out summer bedding

Stake tall or floppy plants

Many spring-flowering shrubs will need pruning

We are still working through the Pandemic !!!
Gardens don’t stop growing because a Government minister declares a crisis, so we are being very careful, complete with gloves and social distancing.

The motto could be “Carry on Gardening! “

(However, to avoid chaos and an epidemic of helpless laughter, we guarantee not to employ any of the “Carry On” teams )

Now you know it’s safe to give your garden the treat it deserves –

Marching on in your Garden!
Spring is on the way with more sunshine, so we need to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden.
Planting a range of summer flowering bulbs.
Lawns will start to need mowing.
We should lift and divide any overgrown clumps of perennials and prune bush and climbing roses

More tips for February
Perfect time to select larger clumps of snowdrops, divide carefully and re-plant.
Bring out your gladioli corms into a light warm place (around 10 degrees Centigrade) Plant later when they sprout.
Do the same with Dahlia tubers- but keep them from drying out with an occasional water mist spray.

Garden Tips for February:-

Get your vegetable seed beds, ready

If you have apricot, nectarine or peach trees , protect any early flowering from frost

Check that fruit and vegetable vulnerable to birds have been properly netted

Wisteria and all those winter-flowering shrubs will need pruning once the flowers are finished.
As will any hardy evergreen hedges. If you have overgrown deciduous hedges, time to renovate
You have climbers in your conservatory?

If so, they probably need pruning now.

This is time for the first cut of your grass and don’t forget to clear out any dead blades if you have any of the evergreen grasses.
