Ash dieback is a fungus (a fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) to which originated in the trees of Asia where is not much a problem to some of its native trees. In the UK (and across Europe) however it’s a problem as the native ash species has not much natural defence against this fungus.
Spores blow in the wind and land on the ash trees, penetrating the tree leaves and into other areas of tree. The fungus will then grow in the tree.
The fungus causes leaf lost (shown as pictured) and this can be at the top of the tree at first instance. Also, the crown dieback of trees to which can over time weaken the tree in parts or the whole tree. The fungus (along with other pathogens) can kill the tree or accelerate weakness of limbs, branches.
The lost of strength in the trees caused by this dieback fungus (and other pathogens accelerating problems) can cause issues when a tree is in a private garden, next to a road, in a public park.
Ash dieback arrived in Dorset a few years ago but in Weymouth & Portland, Dorchester in 2023 the cases have risen in what we are seeing and trees are needing to be dealt with.
