Planted last autumn, the spring flowers are coming up strongly in this redesigned north London garden characterised by dappled shade. The new magnolia and Amelanchier have bloomed, the upright cherry tree, Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan', is currently blossoming.

Also in flower are the winter-planted espalier apples and pears in the vegetable growing area, created from an unused part of the garden at the rear.

It's lovely to see everything growing so well after the winter months - next, the hydrangeas and roses, astrantia and hardy geraniums are coming coming through to provide colour throughout the summer.

Thanks to Liam Murdoch and his team at London Green Spaces for the landscaping, and preparation of the borders for planting.

It's been a super-busy year in the gardens in 2025. Whole gardens redesigned, gardens replanted, front gardens reimagined, back gardens refurbished.

Here's a taster of some of the gardens we've worked on in the last 12 months.

Thanks as always to our clients who entrust with their gardens, and to Green Spaces London, and Skinner, who have turned the visions into reality -

Looking forward to the next 12 months - we have projects in progress for 2026, but there's always room for more. If you'd like to see how we could transform your garden, whether big or small, do just get in touch.

Taking advantage of the mild (if a bit blustery at times) autumn weather, we been putting the finishing touches to this north London garden.

We've taken care to retain the leafy, woodland surroundings to the garden and packed it with plants such as Hydrangea, Anemone x hybrida, Tiarella and hardy Geraniums, which will enjoy the dappled shade.

The beautiful terrazzo stone under the pergola echoes the original flooring inside the house and complements the black/white/grey tones of the structures throughout the garden.

The clients specifically requested an area dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables and the next stage of planting will bring in fruit bushes and espalier apples and pears for this zone.

It's been lovely to work with such engaged and positive clients throughout this project, and huge thanks go to Liam Murdoch and his team at London Green Spaces for bringing the vision to life -

For this front garden transformation, we wanted a clean but traditional look which complemented the existing brickwork.

The black and white Victorian tiles lead from the front gate to the steps to the house, with contrasting Egyptian Beige limestone paving for the steps themselves and the path across the garden.

The front border is planted with evergreen Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Queen'. The light-coloured grey-green foliage will grow into an attractive, low-maintenance hedge.

Good to work with .s.skinner_landscapes again on this project - thanks Billy and Mikel -

The furthest north I have ever travelled to visit a garden, this is the Botanical Garden in Akureyri, on the north coast of Iceland. Nestled in the side of the fjord which runs to the east of the town, it is comparatively sheltered from the Arctic elements.

The garden is filled with well over 2,000 plant varieties, both native to Iceland and the Arctic, and those which have naturalised or been introduced.

One of the main objectives of the garden is to test which plants can tolerate or indeed flourish in Iceland's extremes of climate: the dark and cold of winter, and the 24-hour daylight in high summer.

It's a fascinating stroll through alpine settings, and borders filled with perennials, such as the lupins which have colonised much of Iceland's rural spaces, delphiniums, astrantia, dog roses, hardy geraniums and ligularia.

Splendid day at the Chelsea Flower show with Andrea Newman, despite a few rain showers. Some of my favourite gardens pictured here: (1) I loved the sandstone shapes and crevice planting in the Seawilding garden, designed by Ryan McMahon, complete with saltwater pool and seaweed sculpture.

(2) Also inspired by Scotland is the Fettercairn Wilderness Retreat, designed by ssh scapes, in the Balcony Garden section, with its outdoor copper bathtub, Heather ground planting along the floor, and clever drainage system.

(3) The Red Cross Garden, designed by John Warland and Tom Bannister, with its layered stone terraces, softened with natural boulders at the edges, created many creative spaces for alpine plants, with a waterfall and pools.

(4) Nigel Dunnett's sand dunes in the Hospitalfield Arts Garden (another Scottish inspiration) is a showcase for coastal and resilient plants.

(5) Monty Don's dog garden is an appealing, accessible space, featuring an appropriately scuffed lawn with dog toys, dense planting and a large tree to provide shade.

(6) The relaxed planting in the Addleshaw Goddard Freedom to Flourish garden (Carey Garden Design Studio) is set against metal-walled terraces and an imposing drystone wall.

It's been seven whole years since I last visited Sussex Prairies, a beautiful garden of perennials and grasses, created over an 8-acre field just outside Henfield, Sussex.

The wet weather this year has ensured that the garden is still green and lush, with the high summer flowers making a kaleidoscope of colour everywhere you look.

Wonderful combinations of Echinacea, Veronicastrum, Heleniums, and Verbascum, just to pick a few.

Awesome -
