Although snow and ice limit active horticultural work, winter conditions provide valuable opportunities for ecological observation. Animal tracks in the snow reveal patterns of movement and habitat use, offering insight into the range of species supported by the garden. These organisms form part of a wider ecological network that contributes to soil health, nutrient cycling, pest regulation, and overall garden resilience. I think this is the footprints of a fox.

I love helping people with their gardens, and I’m always eager to discover new ones too. Recently, I visited Ashwood Nurseries and John’s Garden in Kingswinford, West Midlands — an immaculately maintained and truly inspiring place.
