TEDDY BEAR CHALLENGE!

The Challenge (10Mar20) - "Can you please restore this Box Shrub into the Teddy Bear that it was over 25 years ago ready for my Daughter's Wedding in September20."
The Response - "I'll do what I can but no promises (thinking OMG - no pressure like)"
Owing to Pandemic Lockdowns the Wedding has been postponed to 02 October 2021 which bought me more time - Congratulations in advance to the happy couple.
Four clippings later he is nearly there.

Apple Tree Resurrection!

I was first introduced to this apple tree (unknown variety) on the 13th of February this year in a very sorry state having been neglected for some years and subsequently butchered. I went through a process of tidying it up on the same date with a view that it will produce fruit, pickable at head height, in the Summer of 2021. On the 15th of May I was finally able to cut turf away from the trunk and mulch the surrounding soil with good old composted horse manure. Grass around any tree will rob it of nutrients - no tree in a wood or forest has grass beneath it. The last photograph was taken on the 1st of June and I have every expectation that the tree has a good future and will produce quality fruit if looked after (photographs by permission of the home owner).

Brutal Chop!

Coronavirus may have cancelled this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show but it hasn't stopped me carrying out my annual 'Chelsea Chop'. This is the practice of chopping down to half their height of summer flowering perennials before they develop flower buds - traditionally carried out in Chelsea Week. The benefits of doing this are a higher flower yield and much denser foliage (much like pinching out annuals). The denser foliage is an additional safeguard against drought as it encourages a micro climate at the base of the plant reducing water evaporation. The initial result always looks destructive and horrible as you can see from the before and after photos of my perennial Helianthus but I assure you the rewards in the summer make the process well worth it.
