Automatic gates: what needs checking, and when

Automatic gates take a battering. Wind, rain, daily traffic, and they're often the first thing anyone sees at your property, so a fault doesn't just look bad, it leaves your perimeter open.

A few things worth checking regularly:

Safety edges and sensors, to make sure the gate stops when it should
Hinges, tracks and motors, for wear that leads to sticking or grinding
Locking mechanisms, so they're still holding firm under daily use

How often depends on how much traffic the gate sees. Busy commercial sites often need a check every 3 months, while quieter domestic gates can usually stretch to 6 or 12.

Planned maintenance catches the small issues (a worn hinge, a slow sensor) before they turn into a gate stuck open, or worse, stuck shut.

Tailgating: the security gap most doors miss

You install access control, get everyone their cards or fobs, and think the door's sorted. Then someone holds it open for the next person without checking who they are. That's tailgating, and it's one of the most overlooked gaps once other security measures go in.

It matters most where you've got several entry points and a lot of people coming through them daily. Offices, warehouses, multi-tenant buildings, anywhere staff are used to being polite and letting the person behind them through.

The fix isn't just telling people to be more careful. Proper access control systems with real-time event tracking let you see exactly who's badged in and when, so gaps are obvious. Video door entry adds a visual check before anyone's let in at all.

For sites with 3 or more doors and 20 or more users, a cloud or software based system makes managing who has access far easier than a stand alone setup.

Has anyone in your building ever questioned a visitor, or does the door just get held open?

Fix key chaos without ripping out every lock

Missing keys, mystery cylinders, and staff carrying a dozen keys each: sound familiar? A master key system solves this without replacing every door in your building.

Here's how it works. One master key opens everything, while each door still has its own individual key for day-to-day use. Split into departments and each area gets its own sub-master, so a teacher's key opens their classroom but not the one next door.

Cleaners' cupboards and store rooms can sit on a separate keyed-alike set. Main entrance doors are often kept outside the main system too, so if a master key goes missing, you only need to change the outer cylinders, not the whole building.

We work with patented systems from Assa, Abloy, Mul-T-Lock, Evva and ISEO, which protects against unauthorised key copying for years. Schools and offices with dozens of separate locks benefit most.

Does your alarm meet the grade your insurer wants?

Insurance companies often insist on a graded intruder alarm before they'll cover your premises, and it's worth checking yours actually meets the mark.

Compliance with current standards like BSEN13637 matters here too, not just for grading but for how your whole system holds together.

Before upgrading or installing, ask yourself a few things. Which areas actually need protecting? Do you want wired, wireless, or a mix of both? Has your insurer specified a grade you need to hit?

Once it's fitted, the work isn't done. Insurers usually expect regular servicing, and Keytrak's maintenance plans include a weekly remote health check plus a full on-site service at least once a year.

Modern alarms can also be managed from your phone or linked to CCTV and smart locks, so the system works together rather than in separate pieces.

Has anyone checked what grade your current alarm actually meets?

A quick way to check your business security this week

Walk your premises with fresh eyes and you'll usually spot the gaps straight away.

Start counting your doors and users. If you've got 3 or more doors and 20+ people needing access, a stand-alone lock system will become a headache to manage. Cloud or software-based access control makes life easier as you grow.

Check your intruder alarm too. If it's still not offering smartphone alerts or wireless options, it's worth an upgrade, and your insurer likely expects a full on-site service at least once a year anyway, alongside more frequent health checks.

Don't forget the perimeter. Bollards, anti-vandal grilles, and secure car park access matter just as much as what's on your doors, especially if unauthorised vehicles can get close to your building.

What would an outsider find if they tried to get into your building right now?

Locking down data isn't just physical security anymore

If you're storing customer records, staff files, or server equipment, GDPR expects you to show you've taken real steps to protect them.

Access control on your server room or archive room does exactly that. It restricts who can get in, and logs when they did, which matters if you're ever asked to demonstrate compliance.

You don't always need a full system to get started. A battery operated handle set on the right doors can get you compliant quickly, without a big install job.

If you're running more than a handful of doors and users, a cloud or software based system makes managing access far easier than juggling keys or standalone units.

Worth asking yourself: do you actually know who's been in your server room this month?

What Is Perimeter Security (And Are You Relying on the Wrong Things)?

Most property owners put all their trust in a burglar alarm and call it a day. But if someone can walk, drive, or climb straight up to your building unchallenged, that alarm is your last line of defence rather than part of a proper security plan.

Perimeter security is about stopping a threat before it reaches your doors and windows. That means looking at physical barriers like bollards and parking posts to keep unauthorised vehicles away from your building, anti-climb solutions like Roller Barrier or Razor Spike to stop intruders scaling your walls and fencing, security grilles to harden vulnerable windows and entry points, and automatic gates and barriers to control who can even access your site in the first place. Combined with your existing alarm and access control setup, these measures create a layered approach that gives criminals far fewer options and far less confidence. ๐Ÿ”’

What does your current perimeter setup look like? And if you manage a commercial property, have you ever had a security review done on the physical boundaries of the site? We'd be happy to talk it through. Find out more about what Keytrak can supply and install at the link below.

Texecom, Pyronix or Honeywell? Which Alarm Brand Is Right for You?

Choosing the wrong intruder alarm brand can leave gaps in your security (and potentially void your insurance cover), so it's worth knowing how these three leading names actually differ before you commit.

Texecom is widely regarded for its robust, professional-grade systems that integrate well with smart devices and monitoring stations, making it a strong choice for commercial premises that need remote management and third-party monitoring. Pyronix brings strong wireless technology to the table, which is ideal if you want a cleaner installation with fewer cables, or if you're upgrading an existing site without major disruption. Honeywell rounds out the trio with a long-standing reputation for reliability and grade-compliant systems that many insurers and facilities managers are already familiar with. All three brands are ones Keytrak supply and install for both commercial and domestic clients across Widnes, Warrington, Liverpool, and beyond. The right choice often comes down to your site, your insurance requirements, and whether you need wired, wireless, or a hybrid setup. ๐Ÿ”’

Worth asking yourself before you get started: does your insurance policy require a graded alarm system? And do you need your alarm monitored by a professional monitoring station, or managed remotely via your smartphone? These two questions alone can significantly narrow down the best option for your premises. If you're not sure where to begin, our team is happy to talk it through with you. What security setup are you currently running? Drop a comment below. ๐Ÿ‘‡
