Wilmslow Wells for Africa (WWfA) host their annual Garden's Day on Saturday, 27th June from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm. This major fundraising day for the charity will enable visitors to explore more than 19 beautiful gardens across Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Handforth, Mobberley and Mottram St Andrew.

The gardens will display a range of designs and horticultural techniques. Some gardens will also serve refreshments, whilst others will have plant sales to inspire you to get planting.

Tickets, giving access to all the gardens, are available on the day for £15 from the first garden visited, or in advance for £12 from: Chelsea Flowers (Chapel Lane, Wilmslow); The Potting Shed (Alderley Edge); Primrose Cottage Nursery (Styal Village); or Shan (01625 520193). Children are welcome for free. No dogs please.

WWfA provides clean water and sanitation in some of the poorest areas of Africa. To date, the charity has raised over £1.8 million, 99.3% of which has been invested in projects covering 20 African countries and benefitting over 750,000 people in desperate need.

We are so very sorry to learn of the passing of Matthew Biggs, a wonderful plantsman and one of life's genuinely good people who was taken far too soon. Andrew and I feel very privileged to have met Matt here at the nursery and witnessed his true passion for horticulture. His many legacies will live on, most recently the healing garden he created at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Hertfordshire ❤️

We're deeply saddened by the loss of Matthew Biggs VHM, the much-loved gardener and broadcaster who devoted more than half a century to sharing his passion for plants.

Across five decades, Matthew helped define public understanding of horticulture in the UK, bridging the worlds of professional practice, gardening history and everyday experience with rare generosity and warmth.

Best known to millions as a long‑serving panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time, Matthew – a trained plantsman, natural teacher, and meticulous historian of horticulture, has also been a powerful advocate for gardens as places of refuge and healing.

In December 2020 he was diagnosed with bowel cancer and spoke openly about the experience and the role that gardening played in sustaining him through treatment. While receiving treatment at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Hertfordshire, he led a major project to transform the hospital’s outdoor spaces into a genuine healing garden.

His career was crowned with the award of the Victoria Medal of Honour in May 2026. Limited to 63 living recipients at any one time, the VMH is reserved for gardeners who have made an exceptional and lasting impact on the practice, promotion or understanding of gardening.

Our thoughts are with Matthew's family and with everyone who knew and loved him.
