Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and best wishes for 2024. The door is at West Horsley Place in Surrey. A grade I listed building steeped in history with connections to Henry VIII, Sir Walter Raleigh (stories regarding his head in a bag mostly). Thomas Cromwell, Queen Elisabeth I, Guy Fawkes and Bamber Gascoigne. Built in 1425 as a huge timber framed hall
house and cladded in ornate brickwork in 1640. Currently famous (Button
House) as the setting for the BBC Ghosts series. Well worthy a visit. #2024

Old Came is a former rectory constructed in the cottage orné style in 1808.
The rendered Grade II Rectory is constructed of rubble stone at ground floor level adopting an earlier building, with the first floor addition of cob walling under an extensive thatched roof.
This private house was home to the famous poet and philologist, the
Reverend William Barnes (1801-86). Thomas Hardy and T E Lawrence were
frequent visitors to this property. Illustration prepared Design as part of planning, construction and joinery drawings for the recent extensive repairs and refurbishment of this gorgeous vernacular property.

The Lady Wimborne Bridge, also known as Bridge 77, with a grade II listing, was formerly a railway bridge built in 1855 to carry the Southampton and
Dorchester Railway over the carriage way leading to Canford Manor, now
Canford School, from Wimborne.

Faced with Ham stone, the bridge remains one of the most ornately carved railway bridges in the country, with a highly decorative use of Gothic architecture. The bridge was commissioned by Sir John and Lady Charlotte Guest, who bought the Canford Estate in 1846, with several bridge designs prepared by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament. Included in this collection of images is a design prepared by Barry
illustrating a more ornate bridge and was likely a great deal more costly than that envisaged and acceptable by the Estate. Barry's highly ornate design of May 1853 was simplified to the structure that was eventually constructed, adorned with pinnacles, crocketting, crests and the heraldry of Sir (Josiah) John Guest.

The bridge continues to command attention and anyone walking from
Wimborne, along the Stour Valley Way, can still pass under this striking former railway bridge.

An Arts and Craft garden structure in Broadstone, the last remaining evidence of the substantial Arts and Craft style house, demolished in the 70’s. This lovely building, built as a changing room for the tennis courts in the extensive grounds, has luckily been maintained and will be given a new life as a garden room / study.
