Plant Highlight ๐ŸŒฟ - Persicaria

Persicaria is a genus of plants I love for their autumn glory. They have big leaves that turn purple in autumn and airy flower spikes (often crimson but pink-flowered cultivars are also available).

They are vigorous growers and should only be mixed with equally competitive plants such as Japanese anemones and large ornamental grasses. But they have their place in a large border, and are especially valuable in part shade conditions.

They traditionally prefer fertile and moist soils but some cultivars have been praised for their adaptability to drier conditions.

Persicaria amplexicaulis Ta**us (๐Ÿ“ท1. aka Bistorta amplexicaulis Ta**us or 'Blotau') is my go-to Persicaria โ€“ described as a more compact, better behaved and drought-tolerant cultivar.

But some more unusual species are worth considering:
- Persicaria filiformis (๐Ÿ“ท2. Spotted at Fullers Mill Garden ) โ€“ stunning velvety leaves marked with a dark chevron, and filamentous inflorescences.
- Persicaria chinensis var. ovalifolia 'Indian Summer' (๐Ÿ“ท3. Spotted at Fullers Mill Garden ) โ€“ vivid red flower buds opening to pink and rounded purple-tinged leaves.

A pocket garden doesn't have to be boring!

A small space is an opportunity to be bold, and this was my chosen approach when designing the outdoor area for this private guest accommodation.

It needed to serve two primary purposes: somewhere to sit when watching the sun rise above the surrounding fields, and a private space to eat al fresco on a hot summer evening. Playful terrazzo-effect tiles and a weathered woven steel screen are the standout features, but the planting brings the scheme together. The lush and highly textured mix of shade-loving plants contrasts beautifully against the characterful old bricks.

Dahlia crush ๐Ÿ’š

I regularly try new Dahlias but this year my favourite is 'Night Silence'. The flowers have a vintage feel, with colours varying from dusky pink to cherry red. The dark foliage works very well in my moody planting combination too.

Did it do enough to oust 'Crรจme de Cassis' from the top of my dahlia hot list? Time will tell!

Are you making the most of the summer weather by spending more time in your garden? Or do you wish your outdoor space was more inviting?

Now is a good time to assess your garden:
- How do you want to spend your summer in your garden? Relax, entertain, grow flowers and vegetables, watch wildlifeโ€ฆ all of the above?
- How do you want to feel in your garden?
- Are there any areas you particularly like - a suntrap or a sheltered spot under a tree?

All these questions are part of the โ€˜design briefโ€™, i.e. what we, garden designers, ask our clients when designing their gardens.

So, if you want to spend next summer in your new outdoor retreat, now is a good time to start the conversation. Get in touch!

Plant Highlight ๐ŸŒฟ - Hydrangea quercifolia

The first image we associate with hydrangeas is usually the big blousy blooms of a mophead hydrangea - staple of any cottage garden (and a fond memory of my grandmaโ€™s garden).

But there are many more subdued hydrangea species to fall in love with...

My favourite is Hydrangea quercifolia or oak-leaved hydrangea. Firstly because of its large cone-shaped flowers, starting white, before turning pink in autumn. They then dry beautifully - perfect to add pizzazz to a Christmas wreath!
But their leaves are what make these shrubs very special: shaped like large oak leaves, green on top and silvery-white underneath, turning bronzy red in autumn and lasting well through winter. And they have interesting bark too!

Wondering why I use them a lot in woodland-style planting schemes?!

Plant-filled afternoon at Sandringham Flower Show ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒธ

While the King & Queen were enjoying their lunch at Sandringham Estate, I was feasting on luxurious greenery and colourful blooms.

is a great opportunity to meet local plant nurseries and chat to expert plantsmen and women (thanks Potash Nursery for your help with Pelargoniums - ๐Ÿคžmy collection will keep growing!).
