The fruiting life of all fruit trees can be extended greatly by keeping a well structured branch framework. The apple tree shown has been in my care for 6 years and had previously been well looked after. What to aim for...quite straightforward an open center prevents overcrowding and allows in light and air to circulate and an open main structure which again prevents overcrowding of the branches. Less is often more and in the case of fruit trees half a crop of well formed fruits with a low disease level is a good aim. Regarding fruit trees we often refer to the term "the up turned wine glass structure" this simply means keeping the branches coming down and keeping the height under control. Trim back shoots to base each year and perhaps a third of the shoots trim even harder to allow regeneration. Water shoots can form on the trunk these can easily be removed each year. There is a large window for pruning up to March is fine.

Get close up and personal why not....if you have a garden table or a bench like this one keep a pot or two of plants going all year round. Will swap the snowdrops for tulips shortly. A little colour always looks great especially in the winter months and you will have something very special and unique....a close up view of flowers and highlighted detail that you will never have seen before. With snowdrops that delicate green edge detail on the flowers, with the parrot tulips I will bring shortly the white feather edge to the flowers.
And yes that is a gnome...seems to get in on every photo opportunity.

You cant have too many snowdrops in your life, these are at a private residence Cimleplesham Hall where I have worked for many years. In case you were going to ask the building in the background...reputably one of the finest follies in the country, also a good place to take shelter in the rain and even a good phone signal but no wifi.

We all love a success story..when rebuilding a garden project I always have a big focus on what to save and reuse.
This project in Wandsford was based on very poor soil and included a seam of Corn Brash. This is a geological deposit of small stone.
The project took 45 tonnes of soil to renew the front and back lawns of the property. Seed or turf, always seed where possible greater choice of variety and at a tenth of the cost.
Cutting back the overgrown shrubs along the driveway allowed regrowth and was a big cost saving. This now provides a very welcoming entrance to this b and b property.

Always plan many months ahead to keep the colour and interest going all year round. Time to contact your spring bulb supplier for Nov/Dec delivery, stocks can run low order now. Once you have them there is a big planting window from November and into the new year, just store in a cool place. Here at Diamonds Farm hq near one of my greenhouses no soil so bulbs planted in pots, can look fantastic highlights the colours and height.

Buxus blight can occur for no apparent reason. Micro climates within a garden can create damp conditions... always clean off leaves after cutting use a leaf blower. Traditional thinking was " Dig out burn and replace" Buxus blight is airborne and will return. Chemical control has proven to be very effective both preventative and curative. The hedge shown here has been sprayed and been given a general purpose feed, I expect to see a full recovery with clean new growth. Will post further photos shortly.

Update on our ongoing project near Wisbech. The project shown is to create an all year round colourful garden, carefully using trees and an arbour to add height and structure. This is a large plot and different styles can be used together, a woodland garden edged with logs has become a main focal point .... time to order the bulbs. Each side of the arbour a touch of formality has been used with buxus hedging, although the ultimate aim of the design will be combination using roses and perennials to soften the effect and give year round change and colour.

I suspect this fragrant but rather fragile beauty is going to fall victim to a thundery shower any minute. Luckily the bush is covered in new buds!
