𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 - 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝘀 '𝗣𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁'𝘀 𝗘𝘆𝗲', 𝟮𝗟 𝗽𝗼𝘁, £𝟳.𝟵𝟵

We have three pots of Narcissus 'Pheasant's Eye' (Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus) ready to go right now, at £7.99 per pot - and they are absolutely worth snapping up if you want to extend your daffodil season right into May.

These are one of the latest flowering daffodils you can grow, and they are well worth the wait. Each bloom produces stunning pure white petals that sweep back from a small, flattened yellow cup fringed with a striking red edge. They also carry a rich, sweet fragrance that is genuinely hard to beat - a bunch of cut stems will easily scent a room indoors.

They are brilliant for naturalising in long grass, adding late-season elegance to a sunny border, and they are fantastic for attracting late-spring pollinators too.

𝗔𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗺 - 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 '𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺'

This stopped me in my tracks the other day and I had to share it with our lovely followers.

This is one of our stock plants of Epimedium 'Red Maximum' (also known as Barrenwort), and the new spring foliage right now is simply stunning - that rich flush of red and bronze on the emerging leaves is one of my favourite sights of the season.

We don't have any available for sale at the moment, but we are working on building up stock and I will share when they are ready. In the meantime, I just wanted to shine a light on a genus that I think is genuinely one of the most under-used in British gardens, and that's a real shame.

Epimedium 'Red Maximum' is a compact, mound-forming, evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial. It produces ovate (egg-shaped), spiny-toothed leaves that emerge flushed red and bronze in spring, settle to a fresh green through summer, and then turn red again in autumn - so it earns its place in the garden across multiple seasons.

In mid- to late spring it also produces delicate open racemes (flower clusters) of maroon to reddish-purple flowers with white-tipped spurs, which are every bit as lovely as the foliage.

It is a hardy plant, perfectly suited to a sheltered spot in partial shade, and it is happy in clay, loamy, or sandy soils as long as they are moist but well-drained. It is brilliant as ground cover under trees and shrubs, as a low-maintenance border edging, or for underplanting in a cottage-style garden. It is also non-toxic, which is always a bonus.

If you have a tricky shady spot that you're not sure what to do with, Epimedium really should be on your shortlist.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 - 𝗘𝘂𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗮 𝘄𝘂𝗹𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗶, £𝟵.𝟵𝟵, 𝟮𝗟 𝗽𝗼𝘁

We have eight pots of Euphorbia wulfenii (Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii) ready to go right now, at £9.99 per pot - and I'd love to find them a good home.

This is one of my absolute favourite evergreen perennials. It forms a bold, upright clump of blue-grey foliage that earns its place in the garden all year round, and from early spring through to early summer it produces large, rounded heads of striking greenish-yellow flowers that are genuinely hard to miss. It is a real architectural statement in any sunny border.

It is generally recommended for well-drained, lighter soils, but I can tell you from my own experience here in Crewe that it is perfectly happy on my improved clay soil too - so don't let heavier ground put you off.

Once established it is drought tolerant, largely disease-free, and will reach around 1 to 1.5 metres in both height and spread. A quick note - like all euphorbias, the milky sap is an irritant, so always wear gloves when handling or pruning.

𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳! 🌱

After a lovely week away with Mrs Greenheart and Mini Greenheart, it was great to see that lots of the seeds I'd sown in the weeks before had started to germinate.

We should have some interesting stock available in due course 🤞☺️

𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀

It’s been a little quiet on here lately, hasn’t it?

That’s mainly down to time being in short supply – Green Heart Horticultural Services has kept me flat out these past few months – but I wanted to reassure you that the Community Nursery is still very much alive, growing, and moving forward behind the scenes.

My commitment to making the aims of the Nursery a reality hasn’t wavered one bit. Creating opportunities, championing environmentally friendly growing, and sharing our love of hardy herbaceous perennials remains right at the heart of it all.

And as the days begin to lengthen, it’s been brilliant to see signs of life and colour returning. A particular highlight this week has been Pulmonaria 'Blue Ensign' – flowering its socks off, with those deep cobalt-blue blooms looking absolutely stunning against its neat, dark green foliage. I'm also keeping a watchful eye on the Dicentra spectabilis divisions, and they’re looking promising – growing away nicely with that tell-tale new growth flush. These have been living outside ever since they were divided and seem to be growing away nicely.

There’s still a long road ahead, but it’s a joy to be surrounded by plants that quietly remind you why you started.
