It’s not timber!! 👀🧙🏼‍♂️

At first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking this beam had been sitting here for generations.

But there’s not a piece of timber in it!!

This faux beam was completely handcrafted from plaster, then individually carved, textured and finished to recreate the grain, knots, splits and imperfections you’d expect to find in an old reclaimed oak beam.

For us, the little imperfections are what make it work. No repeated moulds. No factory-made pattern. Just creating the character by hand until something completely new looks like it’s always belonged there.

The result is all the warmth and presence of an aged timber beam, created specifically for the room — without the weight and limitations of the real thing.

This is exactly the sort of work we love at Cotswold Custom Decor: taking an ordinary material and turning it into something you wouldn't expect.

Would you believe us if we told you this isn't a real timber beam? 👀

It's entirely handcrafted entirely from plaster.

From the grain, knots and splits to the aged timber colouring, every detail has been created by hand to give the appearance and character of an old solid wooden beam.

This is exactly what we love about decorative finishes — taking an ordinary surface and completely transforming what you believe you’re looking at.

No two beams will ever be identical. Every knot, grain and imperfection is individually created, giving each one its own character and making the finished piece completely bespoke.

The project was originally shared on our founder Ashley’s personal profile, so seeing a name as established as Dulux UK notice the work amongst everything posted online was a genuinely proud moment for us.

✨ FROM ORDINARY TO COMPLETELY BESPOKE ✨

What a transformation this has been.

The original hallway and staircase was a fairly simple, neutral space — but we saw the opportunity to turn it into something completely unique and full of character.

Through a combination of hand-applied decorative finishes, warm earthy tones, contrasting black detailing and carefully considered textures, the entire area now feels like it belongs together.

From the staircase, hallway and landing the walls and ceilings, every surface has been designed to add depth, movement and warmth. The darker detailing gives the space definition, while the softer stone-inspired finishes catch the changing light beautifully throughout the day.

And that’s what Cotswold Custom Decor is about.

We don't simply change the colour of a room. We look at the space as a whole and create something individual to the home and the people living in it.

No mass-produced finish.
No two projects exactly the same.
Just craftsmanship, creativity and character.

What a productive and creative week it’s been at Cotswold Custom Decor. 🎨

Bringing bespoke ideas to life, it’s been another week doing what we love — creating finishes with character that you simply can’t buy off a shelf.

Now it’s time to put the tools down for a couple of days. 🙌

From plaster to timber 🪵

A little behind-the-scenes look of creating a completely bespoke faux wooden beam — handcrafted from plaster.

Rather than simply trying to imitate wood with paint, the character is built into the surface itself — shaping the beam by hand, creating the grain, knots, splits and imperfections before the finishing process brings it to life.

The aim is never to make something look perfectly manufactured. It’s to recreate the natural character and variation you’d expect from an old piece of timber — except this one started life as plaster.

This is exactly what Cotswold Custom Decor is about: taking ordinary materials and using craftsmanship, texture and decorative finishing to create something completely unique.

A little apprentice in the making… 🤎

One of the things I love about what I do is that every project has a story behind it — and sometimes you even get a little helping hand along the way.

My client’s daughter was fascinated by what I was doing, so naturally I had to let her have a go and become part of the process. Safe to say, she took her role very seriously! 😂

At Cotswold Custom Decor, it’s never simply about turning up, completing a job and leaving. It’s about creating something completely bespoke for a home, enjoying the process and leaving behind something the whole family will love for years to come.

This project is undergoing a complete transformation, and I genuinely can’t wait to show you all the finished result.

Sometimes the greatest compliment isn't just the finished wall...

It's when a client sends you videos afterwards because they're still admiring it. The truth is, photos and videos never quite capture the depth, movement and texture you see in person. The way the light catches the finish, the subtle tones, and every hand-crafted detail are something you have to experience with your own eyes.

To top it all off, this lovely client even hand-delivered a couple of bottles of w**e as a thank you. That gesture meant more than they probably realise.

Moments like this remind me why I do what I do. It has never been about rushing jobs or producing volume of work. It's about creating finishes that become part of someone's home and something they're proud to show off.
