April was the busiest month I've ever had in business — and one I almost didn't write about.

Spain. Budapest. Milan. Scotland. Seven live projects. Being a dad. And in the middle of all of it, a sophisticated email hack that left me significantly out of pocket.

I sat down to write this week's Surface Notes — our weekly(ish) newsletter from inside Aura Surfaces — and decided to be honest about all of it. The brilliant bits. The bruising ones. And the bigger decision the month pushed me towards: after 25 years in this industry, and two years building Aura Surfaces on my own, I think it might be time to open the doors and bring someone alongside me.

If you've ever wondered what running a design consultancy actually looks like behind the showroom shots, this one's for you.

I finally made it to Milan Design Week.

First time there. Completely on my own. Camera in hand. Meta glasses on. Trying to take in one of the biggest design events in the world without looking completely lost.

And honestly, it was incredible.

Not just because of the products ...... although there were some amazing ones — but because of the perspective it gave me.

Sculptural marble, handmade wall tiles, Italian brassware, hospitality furniture, printable Venetian plaster, kitchen technology, lighting, rugs, art, ideas everywhere.

It reminded me why getting out from behind a desk matters.

You cannot understand where design is moving by only looking at brochures, samples and websites. Sometimes you need to go and see it, feel it, ask questions, get lost, find things you weren’t expecting, and come home with your head full of ideas.

This week’s Surface Notes is about that trip.

I’ve also included the vlog from Milan, poorly filmed in places, loosely edited, but very honest.

Have a read and come on the journey.

This week I wanted to do something different — so come on a journey with me to Milan Design Week. I had never been before. And in my honest opinion, if you’re a designer and you haven’t made the trip yet, you need to go. Not just for the products. For the ideas. For the […]

I’ve been following the Long Lane project for a long time now, and I know first-hand that there are a lot of people across the industry watching this one very closely.

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with inside what will become of of the main lounges when opens its doors in a few months.

Long Lane is an incredibly talked about project built around a simple but powerful idea. Spaces should make you feel something first and foremost.

That philosophy really resonated with me.

In this episode of .uk , we talk about the vision behind Long Lane, how wellness is being built into the space itself, and the reality of bringing a project like this to life. Loui also shares openly about the challenges along the way, from pushing timelines back to increasing budgets in order to make sure the final result lives up to the original vision.

Projects like this don’t happen by accident, and I have huge respect for the team behind it.

Every week I write an article inspired by what happened the week before.

This week I wanted to look at the pressure on the industry. With the talks of gas prices and 2 separate incidents that we had to overcome.

I believe in honesty and authenticity and enjoy writing these pieces weekly and filming the short videos which can be found on our YouTube channel.

But this is a conversation that needs to happen.

See all my articles on our website, links in the bio.

Have you seen a change in the currently quality of porcelain.

Most people don’t realise how much coordination sits behind a delivery like this.

On 23rd February a client contacted us looking for a very specific look for both internal and external surfaces.

By 25th February they had physical samples in their hands, full costings agreed and delivery options confirmed.

Fast forward just 15 days from that first conversation, and the materials are arriving on site via craned delivery ready for installation.

That only works when everyone involved knows exactly what they’re doing — the client, the factory, the logistics team and us coordinating everything in the middle.

Clear communication.
Trust between people.
And a plan that everyone commits to.

I genuinely love it when a project comes together like this.

If you’re working on a project and need honest answers, realistic timelines and someone who understands the entire process, that’s exactly what we do at Aura Surfaces.

Your project gets 110% from us every time.

Our customer came to us already having their feature wood-effect tile in place, and just needed the right main tile to bring everything together.
They were after something neutral in a beige-taupe tone, soft enough to keep the space warm and relaxed.
We went through a few samples, matched tones against their feature tile, and this was the one that suited best. It complements the wood-effect tiles perfectly and gives the whole room a calm, balanced feel🫧

Looking back at this private residential home gym project.

The brief was simple: flooring that could take real impact, stay low-maintenance, and still deliver a sharp, modern finish.
The answer was a 120×120 concrete-effect porcelain tile. Porcelain carries far more strength than most people expect, comfortably handling gym machinery, heavy weights, and daily wear without compromising the look.

The adjoining shower room followed the same floor tile for a seamless transition. The space was then enhanced with a darker wall tile, creating a calm, moody cool-down area that contrasts the clean aesthetic of the gym
