Suburban Oasis

Suburban Oasis A page focussed on my small suburban garden.

A garden service designed to fulfil the needs of a diverse range of people and gardens: regular maintenance, occasional assistance, soft landscaping designs, helpful advice, and programmes for lawn care, hedge maintenance and border management. To achieve your Suburban Oasis, I would be delighted to lend you as little as a green finger or as much as a helping hand.

Two plants that pack a punch when it comes to fragrance. The petals of Zaluzianskya closed all day but as evening descends they unfurl and throw out the most sweetest of scents. The other is the climber Trachelospermum . It too increases its scent from late afternoon into the evening. Even better on warm days.

A genus I’ve long admired. Any guesses?

A job that’s been on the to-do list for a couple weeks.

On our homeward journey last week we popped into Bluebell Arboretum at Ashby de la Zouch. A wonderful place where I’ve frequently purchased plants online but I’ve been very keen to pay them a visit. Excellent plants (specialising in woody plants) and brilliant customer service. Couldn’t refuse another purchase. Any guesses? 🤔

A simple vignette for a shady part of my garden. A few weeks ago, this same patch housed colchicums and a trillium but as their foliage dies back other plants await their turn.

The ever reliable ferns, Begonia evansiana, in leaf but due to flower shortly and will continue to perform until the first frost. Gently creeping around is Saxifraga stolonifera with its marbled leaves and spikes of airy flowers. Finally, still going strong is the immensely durable Luzula Nivea whose white shaggy flower heads stand above the other performers and are just beginning to fade.

All doing their bit to cover the soil and keep moisture locked in. 💚

During the day the buds are tightly closed but by evening, and throughout the night, the petals unfurl and provide the air with the most delicious scent. Zaluzianskya ovata 👏💚

Seasonal tasks are a plenty and trimming the hedges around the patio areas are a must. Checked to see if any birds were nesting 🪺then if all clear, I was happily snipping away✂️.

Pic 1: The fern and hosta working well as a duo. This pairing could also have an earlier display of snowdrops spread at high/low density between the plants to provide an earlier seasonal interest.

Pic 2&3: Currently not paired together but I feel the iris and sambucus have a certain appeal and a relationship between the 2 could work 🤔
