🌷 Spring starts now! 🌷

It might feel a little early to be thinking about spring, but September is the perfect time to start planting many of your spring-flowering bulbs. 🌱

Daffodils, crocuses, alliums, hyacinths and muscari can all be planted through autumn, giving them plenty of time to establish before bursting into colour next spring. 💛💜

🌷 Top tip: Hold off on planting your tulips for a little longer — they’re generally best planted once the soil has cooled, often around November.

Here are 5 key gardening jobs to do in September — perfect for a Laylocks social post 🍂🌿

1. 🌷 Plant spring-flowering bulbs
Start planting daffodils, crocuses and other spring bulbs now for a beautiful display next year. Tulips are usually best left until later in autumn.
2. 🌸 Keep deadheading
Continue deadheading dahlias, roses and other flowering plants to keep them looking tidy and encourage flowers for as long as possible.
3. 🌱 Give your lawn some TLC
September is a great month to scarify, aerate, reseed bare patches and apply an autumn lawn feed while the soil is still warm.
4. 🥬 Plant for autumn & winter
Fill gaps with autumn bedding and plant hardy veg and salads such as winter lettuce, spinach and spring onions.
5. 🌳 Start planting trees & shrubs
As temperatures cool and rainfall increases, September is a great time to establish new shrubs, trees and perennials before winter.

September gardening tip: 🍁 Don’t rush to tidy absolutely everything! Leaving some seed heads and stems provides food and shelter for wildlife over autumn and winter.
