There's a story doing the rounds which indicates a father of three attached a second hand gas cooker, he has brought from a well known internet site, following the distruction of his families much loved gas cooker which was damaged during their move to their new home, the move was brought about by his wife's untimely death in an accident while out for the evening with friends. Believing it was just a case of attaching the gas hose, he installed it with out a second thought. Over a period of days he noticed startling changes to two of his daughters, they both became sleepy and suffered really bad headaches... sadly one of his daughters collapsed as she attempted to cook some home made chips in a old fashioned chip pan, she suffered extensive burns to much of her body. The cooker was later inspected by the likes of Health and Safety Exec', who found it had an incorrectly fitted burner in the oven, the large burner on the hob top was not the correct one for the model, so failed to burn correctly, it was also found the gas supply to the property was inadequate due to the size of the pipework. Days after discovering the reason for her sisters accident the other daughter left their home refusing to ever speak to her father ever again. the daughter sited the fact the day he had brought this gas cooker, their father paid over one thousand pounds for fishing equipment proclaiming only the best was good enough, equipment also damaged during the move.
Most gas installers, including the high street appliance retailers charge about 80 to 100 pounds to install a standard gas cooker and in doing bringing the installation up to current standard, this does not include pipework or repairs required beyond 1 metre from the appliance. As a typical gas cooker lasts about 6 years, that works out about 13 pounds per year or 30 pence a day, so NOT that expensive
