In the meantime , here are some garden maintenance jobs to do in February/March….

1.Hedge cutting/renovation. Prune and shape hedges before the spring nesting season.
2.Mulch beds with organic material to retain moisture and prevent annual weeds. Mulching will also improve the soil structure.
3.Install water butts ready for the summer season.
4. Prune apple trees.
5.Clean pots and greenhouses.
Removing algae allows in more light and helps control pests and diseases.
6.Clean out fallen leaves and debris from ponds
7.Clean patios,decks and garden furniture
8.plant bare root hedges , shrubs and trees
9.Soil preparation. Dig over borders.
10.Tidy borders and plant up winter containers.

Replacing a leaking pond liner with a new rubber EPDM liner. An underlay protection layer was placed in under the new liner then edged with rocks and pebbles that were upcycled from the old pond. Some of the pond plants and water from the old pond was used to establish the new eco system and as soon as the water went in ,the frogs came back to investigate!

A cold but sunny day for the annual hedge trim at a regularly maintained garden with great views across the valley.

Cornus Alba 'sibirica' leaves are turning an intense reddish purple before dropping here at Gabriola yesterday . I took the opportunity to tighten up the box in the foreground which I've been pruning in my version of a Japanese 'Tamazukuri' (ball) style
