Did you know how far back Wotton under Edge really goes?

It is easy to admire the views and the character of the town, but there is so much history behind it too. Wotton under Edge was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 and was once part of the Berkeley estates, which really shows just how long this place has been lived in, built on and cared for.

When you walk through the town or look across the valley, you are not just seeing houses and streets, you are seeing centuries of craftsmanship, changes and stories that have shaped the area into what it is today.

Being based locally, we have always had a real appreciation for the history here and the mix of old and new buildings across Wotton and the surrounding areas. It is something you notice more the longer you spend working in and around the town.

Blending old and new the right way

One thing that often makes the biggest difference to an extension is not the size of it, but how well it matches the original property.

This single storey extension we completed in Wickwar a few years ago was designed to feel like it had always been part of the home. Because the existing property was relatively modern, we were able to source matching stone, brickwork and roofing materials to closely mirror the original build.

It is something that can easily be overlooked, but getting the details right such as brick bond, mortar colour, roof lines and window placement can completely change how natural an extension feels once finished.

Across Wotton under Edge and the surrounding Gloucestershire villages, there is such a wide mix of property styles, from traditional Cotswold stone homes to more modern builds, and each one brings its own challenges when trying to extend sympathetically.

A well-planned extension should complement the property, not compete with it.

Wotton under Edge | A place we are proud to call home

As a local family business, Wotton-Under-Edge has always meant more to us than just a place to work. It is a town full of history, character and community spirit, and that is something we have always valued at JB Young & Sons Ltd.

From its position on the edge of the Cotswolds with views across the Severn and into Wales, to its long history dating back to the Domesday Book, Wotton is a place with a real sense of identity. Landmarks such as St Mary’s Church, the Ancient Ram Inn and the town’s historic almshouses all add to the character that makes the area so special.

Over the years, we have been proud to work on homes and buildings in and around the town, and there is always something meaningful about carrying out work close to home. Being part of a place with so much heritage gives you an even greater appreciation for the buildings, the people and the stories behind them.

Bringing spaces to life from the ground up

This was a really rewarding project for a returning customer just down the road from us in Wotton under Edge, whose family we have also worked with over the years. It is always a good feeling coming back to carry out more work for people who already trust what we do.

The brief was to transform a sloping garden into a usable space for a large oak framed garden room. We started by excavating a significant area of the garden to create the room needed for the build, followed by all base works, structural preparation, roofing and internal finishes.

The oak frame itself was supplied and installed by a local specialist chosen by the customer, and it all came together to create a space that really makes the most of the surroundings.

To finish the project, we completed retaining walls and pathways to tie everything into the garden and make the whole area practical as well as visually appealing.

Projects like this are a great example of how thoughtful groundwork and careful planning can completely change how a space is used.

Our Story | JB Young & Sons Ltd

Every business has a starting point. Ours began in 1962, when John Brian Young, known as Bill, made the decision to leave secure employment and build something of his own. With a van, a small loan, and a trade in carpentry and joinery, the foundations of the company were laid.

Over time, the business grew steadily and thoughtfully. In 1986, Bill’s eldest son Alan joined straight from school, training in bricklaying and bringing new skills into the family firm. In 2006, Bill retired, and Alan stepped into the role of Managing Director, continuing the legacy while maintaining the same principles the company was built upon.

The motto “Large enough to cope, small enough to care” still reflects how the business operates today. With a small dedicated team and trusted subcontractors, the focus remains on quality, accountability, and attention to detail.

Today, JB Young & Sons continues to carry out extensions, alterations and renovations across both historic and domestic properties, proudly working within the Wotton under Edge community and beyond.

Garden Room & Roof Terrace | Nailsworth

This project was completed for a returning client in Nailsworth, following earlier extensive internal modifications and the construction of an elevated parking area at the property.

The brief was to remove an existing outbuilding and replace it with a purpose built garden room designed to maximise the stunning valley views. Large glazed windows were incorporated to flood the space with natural light and create a strong visual connection to the landscape.

Above, a decked flat roof was constructed with a glazed balustrade system, forming a usable roof terrace while preserving uninterrupted views from this character property. The combination of stonework, timber detailing and glass ensures the new addition complements the existing home while introducing contemporary elements.

It has been a pleasure working with such wonderful clients, and we look forward to discussing further improvements with them later this summer.

This project was completed on the outskirts of Bristol in early 2025 for a new customer who found us through the Federation of Master Builders. The brief was to remove an existing porch and replace it with a new open oak porch, along with the installation of a pair of matching oak doors and oak lintels, cut in to create direct access from the kitchen diner onto the patio.

Care was taken to ensure the new openings and materials sat comfortably with the existing stonework, improving both the flow of the home and its connection to the outdoor space. Oak was selected for its strength, longevity, and ability to weather naturally, making it a practical choice as well as a sympathetic one.

The customer was very happy with the final result, and we’re due to return in the coming months to carry out internal remodelling as the next stage of the project. If you’re interested in how similar changes could work in your own home, you can find more examples of our work on our website.

This phrase reflects how JB Young & Sons Ltd has chosen to operate for decades. Rather than growing into a large, impersonal contractor, the business has remained intentionally small, focusing on consistency, workmanship, and close involvement in every project.
