I am very busy this time of year with design and restoration projects as well as my regular maintenance work. My own garden has to take a back seat despite being a high maintenance garden. I planted Geum 'Totally Tangerine' last year as most plants I thought would work at the front to middle of this border didn't. You can always rely on this Geum cultivar. It's hard working and has a long flowering period throughout the summer. It can withstand drought as well as cold winters having survived last winter when a lot of plants didn't. 10/10 for G. 'Totally Tangerine'!

This majestic tree Aesculus hippocastanum aka horse chestnut or conker tree gets its name from the horse shoe shapes with its nails/clenches that appear under the leaf nodes. These poor trees originally from northern Greece and Albania were introduced into the UK in 1616 and have since become naturalised, suffer from a leaf-mining moth each summer making them appear "moth eaten". An invasive pest, it was first identified in Wimbledon in 2002. They don't kill the tree but will weaken it over time as this inhibits photosynthesis.

Spotted some early flowers on this hazel shrub. They are the tiny red flowers and are wind pollinated. They will turn into hazelnuts and easy to spot in summer months.

I've been asked along with my side kick Sue to help restore this wonderful Victorian grotto in Kent. The atmosphere in the grotto is just wonderful with some lovely planting. It needs some TLC and additional planting to bring it back to its former Victorian glory.

I haven't posted in a while. I've been busy catching up with my clients' gardens post hip surgery.

I spent the day attending Palmstead Nursery Soft Landscape Workshop 'Thinking Outside the Pot'. How do we design and grow to carbon zero? Palmstead is a very forward thinking plant nursery.

Brilliant guest speakers as always including, Peter Gibbs Former BBC Weather Presenter, Sophie Leguil Botanical & Horticultural Consultant, Debbie Bartlett Principal Lecturer at Uni of Greenwish, Tony Kirkham Kew Gardens, John Weir Forestry Commission, Henrik Sjoman Scientist at Gothenburg Botanical Gardens, Noel Farrer, Jacquelin Clay, Anna French, Marian Boswall Landscape Architects and Arit Anderson Garden Designer and BBC 2 Gardeners' World presenter.

Looking forward to designing gardens in 2020! Ellie and Alison, thanks for coming.
