🎉 PLANT OF THE WEEK 🎉
🌟 ACHOCHA!🌟
aka Lady's slipper, Slipper gourd, Wild cucumber, Achokcha, Caihua, Caygua, Cayua , Korila, Stuffing Cucumber.
Latin name - Cyclanthera pedata
Family - Cucurbitaceae
This very pretty vine is originally from the Andes and was grown by the Incas. It's a non hardy annual that likes a lot of sunshine 🌞 but will tolerate some shade and will need something to climb up or along as it can grow up to 4m in the growing season. They're not too fussy about soil but a good helping of compost dug into the ground first will help and will appreciate regular watering in dry weather 💦. They are not frost tolerant so will need to be planted outside after that risk has passed. They are pretty much pest free - just the old slugs and snails problem 🐌🐌🐌
It grows fast and will soon bear lots of small fruit which can be eaten raw when small (no bigger than 2" long) and taste a bit like cucumber or raw peas and are lovely chopped up in salads. They would probably make great pickles but we haven't tried that yet. More mature fruits can be stuffed and cooked like a marrow after the seeds have been removed. You can also use the young leaves.
Nutritionally the fruits are high in vitamin C and fibre and also contain potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and iron.
The health benefits are very remarkable; it is high in natural statins and research conducted in Peru has shown that the plant can lower blood-cholesterol levels in humans with one trial showing an 18.3% reduction in 12 months and other trials showing even larger reductions. The fruit juice is recommended as a treatment for conditions such as high blood-cholesterol levels, hypertension, tonsillitis, arteriosclerosis, circulatory problems and diabetes. The leaves are considered to be hypoglycaemic. A tea made from the seeds is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. The dried and powdered seeds are taken in 1 gram doses as a remedy for intestinal parasites.
Even if you don't grow it to eat it is still a very pretty plant that will cover a large space in a short time, and bugs will love it 🐝
There are other varieties which have spiky fruits and some with exploding pods - how cool.
