After researching masses of recipes for Membrillo so I could use up the quinces from the allotment - this one seems to be the least faff and is actually also Spanish so it’s got a tick from me. It tastes delicious. Lasts six months apparently in the fridge but let’s see 😝

There’s still so much colour around into late Autumn this year. Some plants I recommend to give joy in Autumn. Cornus - red leaves and bright stems across winter. Acers - beautiful all year round and can be planted now or in the next few months (but take a few years to establish). Verbena Bonariensis. Bobbing purple flowers last a long time and provide food in winter for tiny birds. This year the delicate dahlias are still going, as is Poppin Purple agapanthus. Cosmos and Asters were late arriving but now filling that pollen and colour gap into the dark nights.
And this beautiful deep maroon pelargonium which has flowered every day since spring won’t last through the winter but is giving it a good go into October and so I’ve taken a mass of cuttings that I might just being inside soon so I can have a mass of them next year
You can have interest in the garden every day of the year - which is why it’s all so blummin compelling and soul filling. Get gardening and you’ll never be bored, lonely or sad.

Harvested these yesterday in Yorkshire in October. OMG
Never ever ever would this have happened in years gone by.
Tried a few things this year with ripening tomatoes - brought some in, exposed some to sun, put some in greenhouse and by far the most successful was the tomatoes I kept outside on the bush in a sunny exposed position. No bugs eating them (which they did in greenhouse). Ones inside kitchen off the vibe stayed green and were less sweet. It was the ones I left patiently in pots and moved into sunshine that have kept on ripening!

The basil won’t last the winter outside so I’ve harvested the seeds, grown some in a pot indoors so that we can have some new fresh shoots through winter, kept the rest of the seeds in an envelope ready to use again maybe next February / March when I’ll sow inside my house until tough enough to start going outside.
It’s loved the patio all summer and been in practically every lunch I’ve made but for now …I’m debating whether it’s too manly to turn into a pesto with some garlic and olive oil for last minute pasta dishes this week.
This year basil has been a hero 🫡

Harvesting the aubergines - which I may have been too late on. The last few years I’ve had incredible success with aubergines and they’ve been grown mainly outside (once weather has warmed up)
They need loads of water but like my hot patio that basks in sun
I didn’t put them outside until the weather truly warmed up and started them in my sunny back room with lots of light, from seed. Over the last few weeks I moved them to my greenhouse for a bit more protection but I urge people to grow them as if they work in Yorkshire, I’m sure most people will have success
