Camilla Grayley Garden Design

Camilla Grayley Garden Design I help people make the make the most of their outdoor space by designing gardens that work for you. No two days are the same and that's what I love!

My Story...

I've always liked gardening, there are family photos of me aged 2 trowel in hand, with the dog in the garden. Even weeding out the ground elder didn't put me off and I would save my pocket money up to buy plants from the garden section at the back of Woolworths or Squires Garden Centre. At university I went onto study Ecology and Environmental Management but it wasn't the burning issu

e that the environment is today and unfortunately voluntary work wouldn't pay the rent. So while I was working I studied for my RHS certificate in Horticulture followed by a diploma in Garden Design. Having built up my garden design business it has allowed me to combine my creative side with my scientific knowledge. How can I help? If you're looking at your outdoor space, whether its a balcony, a courtyard or even a large country garden and thinking it could do with some help and I don't know where to start? Or you're buzzing with ideas but wondering how to pull them all together that's where I come in. We can talk through what you'd like to do with the space, who its for, how will you use it (a place to be cocooned by nature, an entertaining space to wow friends with your barbecue skills, growing veggies or a kids play area) and make it work for you. Or it may be that you're happy with the overall layout but you look out of the window on a grey winter's day and think it could really do with help adding some year round colour, in which case we can chat over all things plant related and come up with a design for new and/or existing borders. Supply and plant it all up ready to give that missing impact. What I offer

Garden and Landscape Design services: Including initial consultation, surveying (smaller gardens, for larger or more complex gardens I would strongly recommend a professional survey), initial sketches and ideas, Masterplans, technical drawings and specification for contractors to work from and planting design. Planting design and plant supply: Planting plans and lists for new and existing borders. Along with plant supply and planting it all up. Project Monitoring Services: Liaising with the contractors, discussing any issues that crop up to reduce the workload on your already busy life. Garden Consultations: Where there is a small area of the garden that could do with some attention or a plan or sketch would help in pulling all your ideas together to get you started with your garden project this could be the option for you. Garden Writing: I regularly write blogs and columns for various publications including pieces for Yorkshire Living and Handpicked Local (in Harrogate and Wetherby). These are on anything from what's looking good in the garden right now, what to do in the garden this month to what are the latest trends and how to apply them to your own space. If you'd like a piece writing please feel free to have a look at my website or get in touch for example work. Lets chat

If I can help in anyway please feel free to phone me on 01904 670330 or 07887 926095 or email me [email protected].

Today is World Environment Day and this year's theme is Climate Change.

Given we are going to have hotter summers and springs, we will all need somewhere to shelter from the sun in the garden. A few ideas to create shaded areas,

🪴 Shade sails: This particular one is part of curved pergola created by WMEO. The pergola is partly shaded and partly open to grow climbers up or hang flower displays from.

🪴 Pergolas: Providing shade over an outdoor kitchen and bar area, while still enjoying the view down the garden.

🪴 Trees and multi-stem trees, to shelter the plants growing below or sit beneath. Trees are brilliant for helping reduce the ambient temperature in cities, too.

🪴 Pergola covered in climbing roses, to enjoy the scent while wandering through or sitting below it.

If you would like help creating the ideal shaded space for your garden, feel free to get in touch.

I recently got to go back and see a project I worked on in Spain last year (four photos on the left from this year).

It was lovely to see it all in bloom. It has been cared for by a local nursery and landscaping company (same people who cut down the higher branches and gravelled it last year, after I had pruned, cleared and planted).

As I was sitting at my desk I noticed a bee enjoying the lilac geraniums outside the window. Lovely to see it on World Bee Day 🐝.

The idea of World Bee Day is to promote the importance of bees and other pollinators,

🐝 their importance to biodiversity

🐝 to helping maintain ecosystems

🐝 economic value to jobs in horticulture and agriculture, without them we wouldn’t have food security.

There are a few ways, in which we as gardeners can help,

🌷 plant a range of pollinator friendly plants. Different bee species need different shaped flowers, due to the length of their tongues. From umbels (cow parsley), to daisies and tubular flowers (foxgloves and salvias).

🌷 think about doing ‘No Mow May’ or even better no mow summer. Pollinators will be very happy if the lawn is given a chance to flower, or even a strip of lawn.

🌷 Providing a shallow dish of water, that they easily drink from, when the weather heats up.

This week is mental health awareness week and the theme this year is action, to move from awareness into taking steps to improve mental health.

One of the tips is to spend more time in nature,

🌿 going for a walk

🌿 adding new plants to the garden

🌿spending time with friends in green spaces.

Unsurprisingly wellbeing gardens have risen in popularity when it comes to garden design, over the past few years.

🪴 Gardens that create a haven to relax in at the end of the day.

🪴 Space for a yoga mat to be able to exercise outside, on your own or with a friend.

🪴 This year water has become a key feature of a wellness garden, from the gentle trickle of water to listen to, plunge pools and outdoor showers.

The RHS has written a blueprint for wellbeing gardens, that can be applied to private gardens, schools and community spaces. For anyone that is interested in having a read, the link is in the comments 👇.

What does a garden designer do with a bank holiday weekend?

Fill the car with plants for their own garden 🤭.

Next stage of renovation in progress for my own garden.

I have been underplanting with grasses (Sesleria autumnalis), Brunnera macrophylla and Geranium ‘Azure Rush’.

Along with adding Verbena bonariensis, Aster x frikartiii ‘Monch’ and Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ to the borders 🪴.
