What if a painting could become a home?

For this project, I started with Paul Gauguin’s Vahine no te Tiare — not as an image to copy, but as a color DNA.

Warm yellow. Violet-blue. Deep red. Natural green. Soft, earthy neutrals.

The same palette moves through the entire house, but it behaves differently in every room.

In the kitchen and living room, the colors feel warm, social and expressive.
In the bedroom, they become quieter and more grounding.
In the children’s room, the same colors turn playful, energetic and joyful.

That’s the difference between choosing beautiful colors and building a color system for a home.

And because this house has south-facing windows, the strong natural light allows the palette to carry more depth and saturation — while materials like wood, stone, brass and textured textiles keep it balanced and livable.

A painting doesn’t have to match your interior.

Sometimes it can simply give you the starting point for a home that feels entirely your own.

Most interiors become boring not because people have no taste, but because they are afraid of color.

I’m Evgeniya Volzhanskaya, an artist, interior designer, and founder of Coup Project. I’ve been working with interiors for almost 20 years.

I started as an art student, painting walls in private interiors. Then came interior design, construction, furniture, sourcing, apartments, houses, cafés, and development projects across different countries. My paintings are now part of private interiors from Israel and Belarus to Brazil and London.

But throughout all these years, my main passion has always been color.

Since my student years, I’ve been fascinated by color theory, color psychology, and the way combinations of shades can change the way we perceive and feel a space.

And the more I work with interiors, the more clearly I see the same problem: spaces either become safe and generic, or turn into visual noise.

I’m interested in another approach.

Not choosing a color simply because it looks pretty, but using color to create a specific feeling.

Because a good interior does not begin with budget or trends.

It begins with one question: how do you want to feel in this space?

Today I work with color at the intersection of art, interior design, and technical analysis of space.
