Amphitheke offers a dynamic and bold answer to the need for contemporary arts halls as a minimal volume scheme (compared to its programmatic outset) and bold visual identity; a waterfront landmark. The diamond-shaped, a polyhedral urban monolith sits on a formerly neglected zone of the Faleron seafront, a vacant site to be potentially converted into an ecological reserve. A snow-flake planar arrangement accentuates the crystal-like scheme. Six gathering halls in total, may operate simultaneously under a single roof.

This is an non-signature scheme, a mere envelope of restricted gestures. A ‘numb’ planar diagram embeds large expanses of enclosed space into the climatic mandates of harsh direct sun exposure and restless winds, in a context of bold rock formations and ascending topography. Indeed, the diagram of prevailing winds may be read in the organization of openings.
Here is a project on ambivalence, as no front facade exists and no hierarchy is set between elevations.

Plinthecke introduces a novel reiteration of the rural fortress. Partially alluding to an inhabitable bunker, the project simultaneously constitutes a reappearance of the hostelry as a building type, or synonymously, the hospice and even hospitium (archaic, deriving from Latin hospitāle and apparently adverting – at least phonetically – to the modern Greek spiti, σπίτι or home) conveys the lodging house or inn.

It was a great honor and a unique opportunity to present -in suit and tie- a nascent manifesto for Eutectonics at the first post-pandemic in-person Trumbull Fellows' Meeting, last Thursday, February 24, at Trumbull College, in a private event and to an exceptional audience of academics, professionals, administrators and scholars - participating lively in a vibrant discussion that followed!
Lecture Title:
Architecture: From Disegno to Eutectonics
Lecture Blurb:
Setting subtle differences between commonly used terms related to the production of the built or man-made environment and conveying neologisms, the presentation will focus on relevant architectural work ranging from the self-referential and placeless to the highly contextualized.

Plasteque X intro: The design ethic of early modernism on affordable housing is here revisited, generating a villa prototype that remains largely ascetic and reserved rather than self-indulgent and hedonist. The rather purist scheme, as toned-down re-iteration of the modernist workers’ housing legacy from the Weissenhof era – already morphologically aligned to volumetric assemblies of Cycladic aura, witnesses the synergies of an L-form superimposed upon an elongated I-bar that intersects the contouring landscape.

The structural and formal scheme emphasizes a suspension superstructure with visually prominent exoskeletal lattice webbing. The imposing upper volumes are systematically supported by axially set, centrally located and hidden from view structural and service cores that transfer loads while hosting the circulation system – elevators and stairs.

“Building bridges”, a competition entry for the New Headquarters of the Ministry of Infrastructure in Athens by Th. Athanasopoulos, A. Dimitrakopoulos, M. Galani, S.
