The importance of reuse in modern architecture is not only environmental but also deeply cultural and structural.
In Karpathos, a house built in 1960 incorporated timber elements salvaged from a demolished building dating back to 1867. Due to the limited infrastructure of the island at the time and the absence of proper road access between villages, the only way to transport these materials was by sea. Window frames and structural timber were carried by boat and, at times, pulled from the water onto land in order to be reused.
More than 60 years later, these elements remain in use, offering a quiet but powerful testament to the durability embedded in practices of care, adaptation, and continuity.
Deeply Rooted revisits this kind of local intelligence not as nostalgia, but as a lens for contemporary design, where reuse is not exception but method.

Mr. Kostas is a carpenter and woodcarver, one of the last craftsmen on the island who continues the traditional art of Karpathian wood carving. A craft deeply connected to the Karpathiko. The Karpathiko is a dedicated room within the traditional house, a space of memory functioning as a family museum. Dowries, textiles, and personal heirlooms are preserved there, framed by carved "soufades", wooden interiors, and handcrafted details that narrate each family’s story.
Here, wood carving is not decoration; it is an essential expression of local architectural identity. As this knowledge becomes increasingly rare, craftsmen like Mr. Kostas play a vital role in safeguarding a living tradition.

Ο κύριος Κώστας είναι ξυλουργός και ξυλογλύπτης, ένας από τους τελευταίους τεχνίτες στο νησί που συνεχίζουν την παραδοσιακή τέχνη της καρπαθιακής ξυλογλυπτικής. Μια τέχνη άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένη με το Καρπάθικο. Το Καρπάθικο αποτελεί ένα ξεχωριστό δωμάτιο του σπιτιού, έναν χώρο-μνήμης που λειτουργεί σαν οικογενειακό μουσείο. Εκεί φυλάσσονται προικιά, υφαντά και αντικείμενα ζωής, πλαισιωμένα από σκαλιστούς σουφάδες, ξύλινες επενδύσεις και λεπτομέρειες που αφηγούνται την ιστορία κάθε οικογένειας.
Η παραδοσιακή ξυλουργική αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της τοπικής αρχιτεκτονικής ταυτότητας. Σήμερα, καθώς η γνώση αυτή γίνεται ολοένα και πιο σπάνια, η δουλειά ανθρώπων όπως ο κύριος Κώστας μετατρέπεται σε πράξη διατήρησης μιας ζωντανής παράδοσης.

An onsite visit that brings everything into perspective.
At the heart of the Ellinikon development, within the emerging neighborhood of Little Athens, Sunset Groves and Sunset Groves West are steadily taking shape.
Designed as part of a new urban living experience along the Athenian Riviera, these projects are designed to combine contemporary architecture with generous green spaces, natural light, and a strong connection to their surroundings, just minutes from the coastline and the city center.
During our recent site visit with Lamda Development, we had the opportunity to walk through the progress firsthand. Construction is advancing smoothly, and it’s rewarding to see the vision gradually becoming reality.
Little Athens is set to become a vibrant residential hub and Sunset Groves is right at its core.

Deeply Rooted: Το Καρπάθικο

Designing into tradition.

In Karpathos, the Karpathiko is more than a room.�It is the heart of the house, a space shaped by memory, ritual, and everyday life, where generations gathered, welcomed, celebrated, and preserved identity through architecture itself.
Today, this long-standing spatial tradition continues to evolve. Through careful renovation and at times even within newly built homes, the Karpathiko is incorporated, not as nostalgia, but as continuity.
