Day 3 of the 88th European Federation of Geologists Spring Council Meeting in Milos was dedicated to the second field trip, “Mining Operations & Geological Formations”, combining visits to active mining sites with the exploration of the island’s remarkable geological landscape:

📍 Aggeria – Exploration of the Upper Neogene bentonite deposits and the tectonic contact between kaolin/silica formations and bentonite in the Voudia–Aggeria area. Discussions focused on the importance of Milos bentonite production, its industrial applications and quarry rehabilitation practices.
📍 Voudia – Visit to the Imerys Milos Hub headquarters and mineral processing facilities, including drying, activation and raw-material treatment installations linked to bentonite processing operations.
📍 Trachilas – Visit to the Plio-Pleistocene perlite quarries of Imerys Greece, highlighting extraction methods, processing stages and the global significance of Greek perlite production.
📍 Sarakiniko – Observation of remarkable volcanic and sedimentary formations, including Plio-Pleistocene ash and pumice tuffs, diatomite layers and visible seismicite structures shaped by the geological evolution of Milos.

The day concluded with a visit to the Milos Mining Museum and the traditional EFG wine contest, where Turkey, Greece and Italy reached the final round, with Turkey taking this year’s win!! 🎉 🎉

AGG would also like to warmly thank Prof. Emeritus Michael Stamatakis for once again guiding the field trip and sharing his exceptional scientific knowledge and long-standing expertise on the geology and mineral wealth of Milos.

We would further like to thank Imerys Greece for the hospitality and the valuable technical insights provided during the field visits, which greatly contributed to the success of the programme!

Day 2 of the 88th European Federation of Geologists Spring Council Meeting in Milos was dedicated to the first field trip, “Volcanic & Industrial Mineral Sites”, offering participants the opportunity to explore the exceptional geological and mining heritage of the island.

The day began with an introductory presentation by Dr. Michael Stamatakis, followed by field visits where participants observed bentonite stockpiling areas, perlite outcrops and former mining works, zeolite-rich volcanic ash tuffs formed in shallow marine environments, volcanic formations associated with hydrothermal alteration, as well as active pozzolana quarrying, crushing and loading facilities connected to the cement industry including HERACLES Group, a member of Holcim group operations.

The visits provided valuable insights into the geological evolution of Milos and the strategic importance of industrial minerals for sustainable development.

A sincere thank you to all contributors, guides and participants for another successful and highly informative day in Milos.

Day 1 of the 88th EFG Spring Council Meeting and the conference “Industrial Minerals and their Contribution to European Development” has successfully concluded in Milos, Greece.

Today’s sessions brought together geologists, industry representatives, researchers and experts from across Europe for a highly engaging exchange on the role of industrial minerals in sustainable development, innovation and the green transition.

The programme opened with welcoming remarks by Maria Tzima, President of the Association of Greek Geologists (AGG), and David Govoni, President of the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), followed by the keynote presentation of Dr. Michael Stamatakis on the role of industrial minerals in sustainable development and the green transition, with a special focus on the Greek case.

Session I focused on extractive activity and innovation, including contributions from David Govoni, Dr Konstantinos Laskaridis and Arda Arcasoy on sustainable underground mining, geological knowledge and policy support, and the use of satellite radar InSAR technologies in mining applications.

Session II explored research, technology and sustainable development through presentations by Konstantinos Yazitzoglou (Greek Mining Enterprises Association), Ioannis Sanoudos (Imerys Greece), Panagiotis Zachariadis (Imerys Greece), Stelios Roumpedakis (HERACLES group), Thodoris Margomenos (SIBELCO) and Michael Papasotiriou (Hellas Gold). Discussions covered sustainability criteria, circularity and industrial minerals, digital applications in mining production, environmentally friendly industrial uses of mineral deposits and digital transformation within mining operations.

The day concluded with a roundtable discussion on “Integrating Industrial Minerals into the CRM Act Framework: The Strategic Importance for Europe and Greece, and the Role of the EurGeol Title”, moderated by Pavlos Tyrologou.

The discussion brought together Ramon Perez Mir (EFG), Maria Tzima (AGG), Konstantinos Yazitzoglou (Greek Mining Enterprises Association), Ioannis Sanoudos (Imerys Greece), Ria Vagkli (Hellas Gold S.A. Gold), Konstantinos Kydonakis (Geotest Consulting Engineers S.A.) and Marianthi Anastasatou (Hellenic Survey of Geology & Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.)).

Participants exchanged views on the strategic importance of industrial minerals within the framework of the European Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act, the future needs of Europe in raw materials, sustainable mining and resource management, as well as the importance of the EurGeol title in strengthening professional recognition and competence across the geoscience sector.

🌍 The countdown has begun for the 88th Spring Council Meeting of the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), taking place on Milos Island, Greece, from 13–17 May 2026.

Hosted by the Association of Greek Geologists (AGG), this year’s meeting will convene delegates and representatives from National Associations of Geologists across Europe, alongside industry experts and stakeholders.

Discussions will focus on the contribution of industrial minerals to European development and their role within Europe’s strategic priorities and the framework of the Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act.

The programme includes conference sessions, round table discussions, field visits to key geological and mining sites of Milos, as well as the official EFG Council meetings.

We look forward to welcoming the EFG community to Milos for a productive week of scientific exchange, professional dialogue and collaboration within Europe’s geoscience sector.

🌍 Αναβάθμιση των Γεωεπιστημών στην Εκπαίδευση: Συνάντηση ΣΕΓ & ΕΓΕ με το Υπουργείο Παιδείας

Σε συνέχεια των κοινών δράσεων για την εκπαίδευση, τη Δευτέρα 27 Απριλίου 2026, ο Υφυπουργός Παιδείας, Θρησκευμάτων και Αθλητισμού, κ. Νίκος Παπαϊωάννου υποδέχθηκε στο γραφείο του την Πρόεδρο του Συλλόγου Ελλήνων Γεωλόγων κ. Μαρία Τζίμα, την Πρόεδρο της Ελληνική Γεωλογική Εταιρεία - Geological Society of Greece, κ. Assimina Antonarakou, και την Πρόεδρο της Επιτροπής Διδακτικής των Γεωπεπιστημών της Ελληνικής Γεωλογικής Εταιρείας κ. Kiki Makri.

📌 Τα Βασικά Σημεία της Παρέμβασης
Εθνικό Απολυτήριο & Διαβούλευση: Υπογραμμίσαμε την ανάγκη ουσιαστικής συμμετοχής της γεωλογικής κοινότητας στη διαβούλευση της εκπαιδευτικής μεταρρύθμισης, για την υποστήριξη των προγραμμάτων σπουδών και την αποφυγή περαιτέρω υποβάθμισης του κλάδου μας.

Οριζόντια Ένταξη στο Λύκειο: Καταθέσαμε την πάγια και τεκμηριωμένη θέση μας για την εισαγωγή ενός αυτόνομου γνωστικού αντικειμένου Γεωεπιστημών, το οποίο θα διατρέχει οριζόντια όλες τις λυκειακές τάξεις. Αυτό αποτελεί απαραίτητο εφόδιο για τον σύγχρονο πολίτη και καίριο μέτρο για την ενίσχυση του ενδιαφέροντος των νέων προς τον επιστημονικό μας τομέα.

Διεθνές Απολυτήριο (International Baccalaureate): Ενόψει της εφαρμογής του προγράμματος στα Δημόσια Λύκεια από το σχολικό έτος 2026-2027, συζητήθηκε ο ορισμός του περιεχομένου και της θέσης των Γεωεπιστημών, ώστε να ευθυγραμμιστούν πλήρως με τα ευρωπαϊκά και διεθνή ακαδημαϊκά πρότυπα.

🤝 Επόμενα Βήματα
Η συνάντηση πραγματοποιήθηκε σε εξαιρετικό και θετικό κλίμα. Η Γεωλογική επιστημονική κοινότητα διαθέτει την τεχνογνωσία και είναι έτοιμη να συμβάλει καθοριστικά στις εκπαιδευτικές μεταρρυθμίσεις. Το Υπουργείο πρότεινε τη διεξαγωγή περαιτέρω εξειδικευμένων συναντήσεων εργασίας, για τις οποίες ο ΣΕΓ & η ΕΓΕ παραμένουν σε εγρήγορση προκειμένου να εξασφαλίσουμε το καλύτερο δυνατό αποτέλεσμα.
